For the last three years, local councillors have organised Eccles Giving Day to support the town's food banks and have raised over £6,000 in donations to help those in need.
With sanctions, Bedroom Tax, unliving wages, rocketing rents and more, demand for food parcels has increased massively, and with the holidays in full swing supplies at the lifeline centres are running low. Eccles Giving Day is timed to make sure that no-one goes without over the summer, as the three Eccles councillors and their helpers go all out to support the volunteers who run local food banks...
"It's wrong in this day and age that people have to rely on food banks to help look after their families but without their help many local people would go short" says Councillor Peter Wheeler "I have seen at first hand how important the work of these volunteers is and we will do all we can to help them..."
In the week running up to Saturday 13th August, Eccles residents are being asked to find something suitable in their cupboard, or buy something extra, to donate to local food banks.
On the Saturday, between 10am and 1pm, the councillors and their helpers will call round and collect the items, which could be food, toys, baby clothes or anything else suitable.
