SALFORD CITY MAYOR £69,000 SALARY TO BE REVIEWED
|
|
Star date: 4th August 2016 SALFORD MAYOR AND CABINET PAY REVIEW NEXT WEEK When the new Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, was elected in May, he told the Council that he would be seeking to review his £69,000 allowances and those of his Cabinet, in which the Deputy Mayor, David Lancaster, pocketed almost £45,000 last year. On August 12th an Independent Remuneration Panel is due to meet to set new allowances. Last time, this Panel recommended huge increases in pay. Full details here...
|
|
In May, on his first full Council address since being elected, Salford City Mayor, Paul Dennett, explained that he was seeking to reduce his £69,000 allowances and those of his Cabinet – and that an Independent Remuneration Panel would revisit the rates. This Panel is due to meet on August 12th to set new allowances. But last time it met, the Panel - made up of people who earned in excess of £70,000 - recommended 80% increases for the Mayor, and his Deputy, David Lancaster who hence pocketed £44,850. At the Council meeting, Jeremy Corbyn supporter, Councillor John Ferguson, exclaimed that the Mayoral allowances were "not extravagant", while fellow Labour Councillor Bill Hinds argued "that elected Mayors are worth more than backbench MPs" and that "councillors do more than MPs…local councillors are underpaid and undervalued" (see previous Salford Star article – click here). It was left to the Tories to criticise the massive allowance increase while Salford City Council workers were suffering pay restraint and job cuts... "These are difficult times and the idea that we can increase leaders' pay by 80% is obscene…" said Councillor Iain Lindley. When it came to a vote on the new rates it was the Tories who voted against, while the Labour councillors, including Paul Dennett, all voted in favour. Ian Stewart, the new City Mayor at the time, just smiled. Broadly. Indeed, over their four years in office, Stewart pulled in £276,000, while Lancaster trousered £177,400. They will, the Star understands, also get a pension based on these sums. Back in May, the Salford Star put in a Freedom of Information request asking whether Mayor Paul Dennett was still receiving the old £69,000 rate for the job but we were fobbed off with a link to the official allowances on the Council website – which only covered the previous year. After further emails and a response was received stating that "interim arrangements are in place", although there were no details of these `interim arrangements'... "The allowances to be paid to the City Mayor and his cabinet are due to be set by an Independent Remuneration Panel" the statement added "The next meeting of the panel is due to take place on 12 August. Once the allowances have been set by the panel relevant details will be published on the Council's website." It will be interesting to see what the Independent Panel recommend this time...

| .Marc or what ever you are called.question do YOU think this labour council are doing a good job. Do you think they are doing the right thing by allowing multimillionaires to rip the heart out of our heritage by allowing them planning permission to build unaffordable apartments and not pay planning fees or contribute 106 monies to the city??
How do you feel about the £20million + community stadium that has to be given loans to keep it afloat??? What about all the cut backs to major services, taking onboard the amount of money this council pay for consultant's and also pay wages to officers that should be able to do the job,as that's why they were employed in the first place. How about all the deputy mayors or what ever they are being called this week do you think they are value for money or just bleeding the city fry. Fracking should this council allow this.
Now these are some of the things I feel a passion for. So you are saying there is only a handful of people who share my views and concern's?? Think you need to get out a bit more.I apologise for calling you a prat. |

| Mary, I wouldn't stoop so low to start calling you names, and yes I bet you have been called worse, failed politician who jumps to any political party who will have you. Your views are meaningless and pointless, nobody cares what you think save a few people on here.
The star does a reasonably good job in its reporting, sometimes a little subjective than objective, but overall tells us things that we otherwise wouldn't know, it's a shame when people like you Mary, just come on slagging people off with your unwanted vitriolic tripe.

| See "wrote" has given himself a name. Still think mine was better (prat) has a nice ring to it. We are loosing sight of the story here. Do we know who this independent panel are. And who selected them?? I just hope should this panel decided to give our Mayor and his little band of gnome a pay rise, they say NO.Salford labour council over the years have given OUR money away with loans that they must have known would never be paid back.Built a stadium that WE will be paying for god knows how many years. And not only did the council part fund the so called COMMUNITY stadium, they are having to loan themselves money to keep it afloat (cant get my head around that one) And we have the none collection of planning fees from multimillionaires.None collection of 106 monies. The list goes on and on. Yes think the people did vote the right people to run this city.If a donkey had a labour badge people would vote them in.Can't have people with a bit of common sense running the city. Carry on with the prats who are and I am sure we will be in safe hands. And is that the best you can do marc??? Is call me nasty. Been called worse than that over the years. Some people don't like straight talker's |

| What ever"wrote" is called he is a total prat and still think "wrote" is a certain Councillor from a ward in Swinton. I might not have been voted back in. But I will continue to fight for the people, not just in my ward but across the city. And thank god we have the Salford star to highlight the bad management of our city and the way OUR money is being spent on wages for the boys. |

| Perhaps wrote you should except reality, the question is not over taking Money but taking the lowest denominator. If you except the role of councillor you commit yourself to issues that effect the community therefore it takes time, you therefore cannot commit to working fulltime, You are offered an allowance to cover your time more than enough. Perhaps you should count the amount of cash labour TAKE FROM THIS CITY, Host of Deputy mayors, Committee chairs, outside bodies, Huge increases in the Mayor and Deputy Mayor post even down to made up positions like head of international relations, in reality jobs for the boys. You fear to put out your real name for fear of trolls! strange when you appear to be one. Add your name grow a pair, if you wish to discuss my views or my thoughts lets sit round a pint like men
we could ramble on hear all day and I have better things to do. Your sarcastic comment over elections, its hard beating a machine but we try with limited resources and cash it's hard going but with a host of second places we are taking the fight to Labour and you? unless you are Labour |

| Do we know who is on the alleged 'Independent Panel'? Just curious to know. Maybe our Labour Councillor who hides behind the title 'Wrote' (not a very imaginative title is it... could think of better!) can enlighten us? As for Salford Star allowing someone to not use their real name, actually it just helps to show them up for what they really are..... desperate and a coward. Hiding, covering up, denying Salford citizens the truth is what this Council do best after all, and why the Information Commissioner got so frustrated with them that they placed Salford Council in a type of Special Measures monitoring programme (I call that Karma!), shamefully proving the point, and one of only 4 councils in the country to be so. Speaks volumes about the calibre of the out dated dinosaur of an old boys club running our Council, or should that be 'ruining' it. Clearly they have lots to hide from us... but why? |

| No wonder a party spending £47million a year on itself has lost touch with its socialist historical roots. Taking money from poor paid pensioners and students as new members then denying them a vote is against socialist values. Let us offer our Salford Labour Mayor £250,000 a year and see if he takes it. Labour is terminally ill. I never took a penny as a School Governer or as a Councillor and keep to my word in demanding certain posts to be pay free honour posts. The Role of Mayor is top of that demand otherwise voting will fall as people say no more. Little wonder the Labour Party is already 14 points behind the nasty Tory party. Are they just in it for the money? I see UKIP becoming UKUP as the United Kingdom Unity Party to rid us of the political madness. |

And Steven Roe the reason some of us don't put our real names on is because of people like you!! I for one wouldn't like to be trolled all over the Internet when you go searching for me on Facebook! Mary and Joe put themselves in the public eye.....and took the money!! I didn't!

| Dear wrote I can't understand why people don't put their name to a comment. Something to hide. Yes I took the allowance and I took my responsibilities to the residents of Claremont very seriously.i went to council meetings, residents meetings. And like Joe I gave up my job, because I didn't feel i could do justice to the people of my ward and the city. That is one of the reasons our councillors haven't a bloody clue what is happening in my ward.As Joe has said we didn't take the rise offered to us as a group. Why have we officers on £70.000+ doing a job and we have councillors topping up their pension and or full time job, plus their allowance doing the same job. Why does the council spend thousands and thousands on consultants and also pay officers. If the officers need outside help then that proves they are not up for the job.so councillor, sorry Mr wrote have a word with your fellow members and tell them not to take any pay rise should it be offered, because the gravy train is coming off the track's |

| A large chunk of public money is put into the GM Pension fund, this fund is invested into companies like Trexton, who make cluster bombs. So by knowingly paying tax to the council you may be committing an act of treason https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBvMC7b-vAU

| Each month residents pay on average £140+ council tax.Now what are we paying for.yes I know a percentage goes to the police and fire service. What are we getting for the monies going to the counci. Streets cleaned (not often)bins emptied every 3 weeks.Roads surfaced, full of potholes and puddles. Parks looked after,NO.Residents' now doing park cleanups. Children's services cut to the core. Same with adults services.Residents finding it hard to live from day to day. In todays MEN 29pc of Salford residents are loving on the breadline, but still have to find the money to pay their council. Yet we have the mayor and whoever is now the deputy mayor having a pay review. If they have any soul,if they do get a pay rise, they should refuse it |

| A party of self interest that fly's under the banner of socialism. From a job that set out to be the bastion of working for the greater interest of the masses to a job that tops up Labour councillors pension pots. The reality they have lost touch with the working class and have created a private club subsidised by the working people of Salford. Money seems to be the end goal the rest let them eat cake. |
