SALFORD RESIDENTS URGED TO SHUN WILD ANIMAL CIRCUS AT AJ BELL STADIUM

ANIMAL CIRCUS ON SALFORD COUNCIL LAND – DESPITE OFFICIAL COUNCIL BAN
Circus Mondao, which includes performing wild animals, begins a five day run of shows at the Salford Council owned AJ Bell Stadium tomorrow – despite a Council ban on "circuses or other commercial undertakings which keep animals for public display or performance" dating back to 1984.
Animal Defenders International (ADI) is calling on Salford residents to shun Circus Mondao, one of only two left which still features wild animal acts, "an outdated practice which is overwhelmingly opposed by the public" states ADI.

In 1984, Salford City Council passed a resolution which stated that: "No circuses or other commercial undertakings which keep animals for public display or performance be permitted to use land owned by the Council; and that all land-controlling Committees be informed accordingly".
The edict was repeated in 2006 at another Council meeting… "Salford City Council does not allow animals to be used in circuses, if on Council land…"
Tomorrow, 27th July, Circus Mondao begins a five day run of performances at the AJ Bell Stadium in Barton, which is joint owned by Salford Council and Peel Holdings. So why has this been allowed to go ahead?
Circus Mondao features animals including pygmy goats, a zebra*, camel, llama, horses and doves, and Animal Defenders International (ADI) is calling on Salford residents to avoid the Circus, which is one of only two left that still feature wild animal acts…
"Animal Defenders International has repeatedly documented the suffering and abuse of wild animals in circuses" explains Jan Creamer, President of ADI "Circuses simply cannot meet the needs of wild animals in small, mobile accommodation. The Government has promised a ban, but we're asking people to vote with their feet – don't go to a circus with animals."
ADI adds that "Circus Mondao has been criticised by government inspectors for poor animal care including lack of veterinary attention, substandard animal facilities and poor protection of the public.
"ADI evidence of lack of animal care and even cruelty missed during inspections has demonstrated that, given the circumstances of a constantly travelling business, it is impossible to guarantee the welfare of animals in travelling circuses, and extremely difficult for inspectors to identify and deal with welfare failings" the group adds "Despite assurances from the circus industry that animals are well cared for, the physical and psychological health of animals in circuses is inevitably compromised.
"Animals in circuses can also be subjected to brutal training methods and violence – wherever ADI has conducted an undercover investigation in the UK and around the world it has documented acts of abuse" it states "Animal circuses do nothing to teach people about the animals' real needs and the way they live, and have no role to play in education or conservation."
In response, Circus Mondao calls the animals "our large family of talented pets" on its website and adds "We always put the satisfaction of our audience and the wellbeing of our lovely animals in first place…The animals really enjoy the new grass at the new ground. After the show come and visit our animals for a small fee to help towards there [sic] care.."
ADI concludes that "Over 200 local authorities in the UK have prohibited wild or all animal acts on public land and opinion polls consistently show that the public remains overwhelmingly opposed to wild animal acts, with a high proportion against all animal acts."
Within those 200 local authorities is Salford Council, apparently…

Circus Mondao has been in touch to say that it has no zebras performing in this particular show, and that the only animal classed as `wild' in the show is the camel.

| We could go to the circus for the "other side" but do you know what that is? A whole lot of spin put onto the fact (yes, I do mean fact) that animals cannot possibly be afforded the five freedoms that are part not only of the RSPCA guidelines but the animal welfare legislation and a mantra of any reputable zoo anywhere in the world. For those of you who are not familiar with them, they are:
Freedom from hunger and thirst: by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour. Not even zoos get this right as very few of them have wildlife nutritionists on hand to provide a diet that equates to that naturally foraged by the animal in the wild.
2.Freedom from discomfort: by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area. Small travelling crates, circus tents and hardly any area to move around in compared to space provided by a wild environment, mean this one is automatically breached.
3.Freedom from pain, injury or disease: by prevention through rapid diagnosis and treatment. Show me a circus who has a vet onsite whose treatment is not limited by the demands of the owner to keep costs to a minimum. Many try to treat the animals themselves - when they even notice. the fact is that circus owners are in it for profit and animal suffering doesn't even register. You only have to look at Ringling Brothers in the US.
4.Freedom to express normal behaviour: by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind. Do I really have to explain how circuses fail on this one???
5.Freedom from fear and distress: by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering. For any animal, being in captivity, in a small enclosure, not housed with conspecifics and not able to display any natural behaviours such as food foraging, courtship or non-sexual social behaviour, is a surefire recipe for what is now known as zoochosis with it's attendant raft of stereoptypic behaviour. I doubt severely that any circus provides halfway adequate enrichment.
And I haven't even begun to touch on the cruelty inherent in "training" these animals to behave in ways that are completely contrary to their innate behaviours - and which they'll take care the public never see. Go to a circus and you'll see abnormal behaviour that some humans think is cute but is just an expression of an animal slowly going out of it's mind.
If you really want to enjoy animals, watch a nature documentary, go on safari or even watch the birds outside your window, but DON'T go to a circus. You learn nothing and the animals, whatever drivel the circus sycophants come out with, DO suffer.

| Why is Salford City Councils Resolution being blatantly disregarded? Who gave permission for the animals to be held at the A J Bell Stadium and forced to perform? Salford City Council need to address these questions and others that have been raised and explain why their own rules are not being implemented.
No animal should be held captive for entertainment, confined in road trailers and hauled around the country.
We the public need our concerns to be addressed and stand against circuses who have animals in their shows. Perfectly good family entertainment is available in circuses who do not use captive animals. Enjoy the clowns, trapeze artists, acrobats, jugglers and fireaters etc - traditional entertainment without cruelty. |

| I note the obligatory ramble from the notorious pro-circus activist, John Dineley - a man who normally fires his twisted propaganda from the safety of his internet blog and that of the pro-animal circus site Astley's Legacy. Mr Dineley is based in London, which can only mean that the circus grapevine has again been activated to come to the aid of Circus Mondao. I'm not going to argue the rights and wrongs of captive animal training, as I'm sure that my views are already well-known to many. However, I will say that I'm disgusted at Salford City Council's decision to break its policy on shows with performing animals, proving - yet again - that its much-vaunted high moral values always come a very poor second when large amounts of money are involved. |

| ADI are an amazing Organisation who rescue animals suffering from physical and psychological cruelty.They then return them to their natural habitat or rehome them in an environment as close as possible to this where they can't be released. I can see no reason why an Organisation would invest such time and effort if they weren't acting in the best interests of the animals...I fully support ADI and animal activism. |

| I went to a circus about 15 years ago in Middleton near the M62 roundabout Junction 19..they had Elephants then and I went round the back to see them and touched their back legs and saw the whip marks. DON'T tell me the Wild animals...WILD animals enjoy this day in day out in the summertime. Stuck in tents performing??? I don't think so. Travelling about in vehicles up and down the country. THIS is cruel and anyone who watches is selfish. If the council Doesn't stop it they are just as bad as the people that whip the animals to get it to do what they want. |

| Since 2012 all circuses with wild animals in England have been inspected and licensed under the Welfare of Wild Animals in Travelling Circuses (England) Regulations. If they could not achieve the standards of animal welfare demanded by this regulation then they would not receive a licence – these inspection reports can be found as public information on DEFRA’s websites. They have passed all inspections and therefore Jan Creamer of the animal-rights extremist organisation Animal Defenders International (ADI) is misleading in her statements. If Jan Creamer has evidence that cruelty is occurring in this circus she could use some of her businesses money to prosecute the owners under the 2006 Welfare Act. To date, she has not done this and therefore her position is basically hyperbole and would not stand up in a court of law. Moreover, ADI is not registered animal charity in the UK but a business and part of the animal-rights industry. The circus has one human habituated zebra (which does not perform in the show) and a camel – a species that is considered domesticated internationally. In the 1990s an independent animal behaviour expert Dr Martha Kiley Worthington (sponsored in part by the RSPCA) reported after extensive empirical studies that circuses in the UK are not by their nature cruel. A DEFRA commissioned review in 2007 supported this same opinion. It is about time the public understood the difference between animal-rights (a political ideology) and animal welfare (a science) and stopped giving money to businesses such as Animal Defenders International. |

ADI is a money making nimal rights lobby group that want all interaction with animals abolished. She is a fanatical campaigner against zoos and circuses, things she knows little about if anything at all. All circuses are Government monitored and pay for their own regulations.Let the public see for themselves, Circus Mondeo is a first class animal husbandary organization caring for its animals and bringing light and smiles to families, yet are being plagued by an organization that even has affiliations with ex members of the animal liberation front. Why do you give so much time to ADI, an animal rights EXTREMIST group?
If circuses with animals were really "an outdated practice which is overwhelmingly opposed by the public" as stated by ADI,
surely they would die out a natural death, no need for any ignorant bans by council?
The fact is that those of us who enjoy being entertained by family friendly circuses with their gorgeous, well cared for animals can see through the lies told by extremist groups such as ADI.
We can clearly see that the animals are very well cared for and not suffering in any way at all.
Council have no right to make any dubious moral judgement on me wishing to take my family to this circus.

| Animals are unique creatures that deserve the best of care. I do not support use of animals in circus acts. I visited Chester Zoo this month, listed the best in the UK. I was fascinated seeing excellent care with large spaced enclosures. No doubt local authorities were taking all aspects seriously. I demand our Mayor Paul Dennett goes to this circus today to check the situation. Any signs of abuse, mistreatment or areas of concern means, as our representative, he must take responsibility. In addition he must check Salford Council rules and make sure each is implemented. Do it now Paul. |

this is typical of the media. CIRCUS MONDAO is licenced and regulated by DEFRA. we have dressage horses , dogs that do agility and camels that give rides. We do not class any of our animals as WILD ANIMALS, unfortunately animal rights groups are against most human interaction with animals and would love to see a vegan world with no contact with animals, as they beleive any contact with animals is enslavement !!!!! PLEASE USE YOUR OWN EYES AND TAKE A LOOK INSTEAD OF BELIEVING EVERYTHING ON THE INTERNET . |

| Why is anyone surprised at this move, no doubt the stadium will be getting a huge fee, therefore it is in the Council's interest since they 'loaned' the stadium thousands. If this circus see their animals as family, how come the money needed for the care of them has to be raised by allowing people to donate after the circus ? Signing and boycotting. |

| How they got permission to even set this up is making me wonder why my council have given permission. I have signed this because I hate the thought of wild animals being in captivity and not where they should be out in the wild. It's just so cruel and it's not necessary to use them if the circus has other perfectly good acts. Stop this now if you do t want a backlash from Salford residents |

| When we had a play day the health and safety police said we would get closed down because the fairground people were giving goldfish as a prize. They are now allowing animals to be used as entertainment on their land. This council seem to make the law to suit themselves. |
