For their first Be Reet show on The Sounds of Salford Radio this week, Tony Thornborough and Steve Nicholson were broadcasting from `under the arches on Chapel Street', complete with dripping water sound effects...homeless after leaving Salford City Radio and not yet allowed into the Sounds of Salford studios.
It was all part of the banter imparted by the pair, honed at Salford City Radio, where Tony presented shows for eight years before jumping ship...
"The Sounds of Salford is more suited to our personality, we can talk more about politics and just do what we want" Tony explains "If Salford City Radio is Coldplay these guys are the Sex Pistols, although I can't say enough about how SCR has helped me become the ridiculous fool I am today."
The Be Reet show mixes local and national indie sounds with what Tony calls "heavy hearted humour", and the first show, as well as coming from `under the arches', played top tracks by the likes of The Moods and Monkeys In Love from Manchester and a stunning song by Phillious Williams from Southend...
"You'll never hear the likes of Lady GaGa or whatever on our show" Tony says "We do go for the underdog; independent acts mixed with a bit of classic stuff. Motorhead might be on there and the Pixies, we'll mix it but ultimately the aim is to give a platform for up and coming bands that never get the opportunity to be heard on radio. It's musicians of all genres mixed with some classics from the underground of the past and present."
The Sounds of Salford is currently an online station that is drawing in presenters, from `Golden Girls' to Salford Red Devils fans, with rants, rock and roll years and everything bar the kitchen sink - and gathering a growing worldwide audience, after only being founded last year by Simon Williams (see previous Salford Star article – click here).
"We just want to continue doing what we do with The Sounds of Salford which, for us is a breath of fresh air" says Tony "We like Simon Williams' enthusiasm for what he is trying to do with the station. Salford City Radio has been great to us but we want a little bit more freedom..."
