SCUM VOTERS PORTRAYED AT SALFORD WORKING CLASS MOVEMENT LIBRARY

Star date: 25th June 2016

HOW DID IT GET TO BREXIT?

Democracy Drop In
Saturday 2nd July 11am-2pm free
Working Class Movement Library

With perfect timing, Salford's Working Class Movement Library has a Democracy Drop In day next Saturday, showing newly acquired objects related to campaigns to get the vote, including an 1819  cartoon arguing that it would be 'the scum' who would rise to the top if more people got the vote.

Full details here...

This week has seen one of the biggest exercises in democracy in the history of the country, with 33.5million people casting a vote in the EU referendum. Yet, as recently as 1969, young people didn't have a vote, while campaigners died at the Peterloo Massacre in Manchester, in 1819, trying to get the vote for ordinary people. The campaign was enforced by the huge Chartist rallies in Salford, on Kersal Moor in the 1830s, followed by the Suffragettes in the 20th Century.

The history of the fight for the vote is depicted in a Voting for Change project at both the People's History Museum and the Working Class Movement Library, which, next Saturday 2nd July, sees a Democracy Drop In, exploring new objects acquired as part of the Heritage Lottery funded scheme.

These include an archive of election material from North Lincolnshire - including expenses spent on beer and breakfasts for voters - and an 1819 cartoon arguing that it would be 'the scum' who would rise to the top if more people got the vote.

The Drop In is a chance to get up close to some seriously historic objects, and, if needed, a member of staff will be on hand to discuss the past and present. There's sure to be lots of debate after the Brexit vote...

No, not yet they aren't Sam. You have succeeded in a democratic victory over extremist neo-liberalism. If as a nation you subsequently snatch defeat from the jaws of victory you will only have yourselves to blame. Johnson and Farage were the only politicians shrewd enough to realise that history teaches that it is only the will of the broad population that ultimately determines a nations' fate. They spotted the wave and surfed it, they didn't generate it. They certainly used oratory skills to appear as leaders but their aims are very different. Johnsons' party are English neo-liberals who only despised the EU because they weren't the neo-liberals dominating it. Farage is more complicated. His past is neo-liberal but not necessarily his future. UKIP has no permanently fixed identity, it's been carefully managed to be so. Its' policies will evolve into whatever Farage believes represents the wishes of the majority, because the majority, (who are not middle class), are suddenly awake and voting. You have an extremist neo-liberal Chancellor of the Exchequer who is busily trying to trash the economy. You also have the Herculean task of cleaning the Aegean Stable of Westminster ahead of you. You do have the shovel of democracy back in your hands though, so it's up to your nation to use it wisely.

I would love it if the referendum result was a victory against neoliberalism ... but aren't Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage the victors ?

This is an exceptionally well timed event. 'Western' democracy is currently being destroyed in a way even the German National Socialist Party of the 1940's couldn't achieve. The last threat to democracy of similar magnitude was the invasion of Xerxes in 480BC. The Xerxes we face is Extremist Neo-Liberalism. Tyrants of old claimed power they inherited from their dynastic DNA, but at least there could only be one at a time to deal with. Extremist neo-liberalism produces a hydra-headed monster of many tyrants. These tyrants spawn in the board rooms of multinational corporations and companies large and small. They spawn in banks and financial institutions. They draw their power from money and the media. They control the USA. They control the EU. You've just spanked their backsides, they're smarting and they don't like it. Watch their democracy hating, befuddled slaves gather in their masses in London to try to overturn your democratic victory. They will seek rapid retaliation, be on your guard. Defend your democracy like never before. The battlefield is neither 'left' nor 'right'. Those are redundant political ideologies of a world that's gone. The battlefield is identity! Who are you? What do you value? What are you prepared to do about it? This war for democracy, just like all previous wars, cannot be fought by political parties. Once again only the masses will have to fight as one for their individual freedom, or else meekly bow down as slaves to the 21st Century Xerxes Ltd.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
