SALFORD LABOUR PARTY SPLIT AND AT WAR DESPITE NEW MAYOR

Star date: 18th May 2016

ANOTHER LABOUR COUNCILLOR DISCIPLINED AS SPLITS WIDEN

The Salford Star understands that Councillor Howard Balkind will be dragged before the Salford Labour Party chief whip to be disciplined, after an email warning of the growing divide within the local Party.

Following, what one insider called the `kangeroo court' which removed the whip from Councillor Wilson last year, and the resignation of Labour Councillor Neil Blower from the Party alleging bullying, this latest episode is already reflecting badly on new City Mayor Paul Dennett.

Full details here...

Amidst the official `crowning' of Paul Dennett as Salford City Mayor at today's full Council meeting, the Salford Labour Party is, yet again, at war with itself following an email sent to members by Councillor Howard Balkind.

The Salford Star understands that within the Labour Group this week, there was an election for chair between Councillor Balkind and John Walsh, which Walsh won. Balkind reckoned he could unite the splits in the Party, and was furious at the result, as Walsh was, apparently, the person who badly handled the disciplining of Councillor Paul Wilson last year (see here), and the bullying allegations by Councillor Neil Blower (see here), who subsequently resigned from the Party.

"The way Walsh dealt with Paul Wilson last year was diabolical, a kangaroo court, and a lot of us feel that it was to make sure he had no chance of fighting a proper campaign for the Labour Party mayoral nomination" one Party insider told the Salford Star last night "Also, the way Walsh dealt with Neil Blower was the reason he walked away from the Party."

Apparently, Councillor Balkind sent an email to Labour Group members following the decision to elect Walsh as chair, setting out the position, stating that the Salford Labour Party is split down the middle and now has no chance of moving forward.

Following the email, the Party insider said "The shit has hit the fan because Paul Dennett is up in arms and Balkind has been called to appear in front of the chief whip..."

Under the previous Salford City Mayor, Ian Stewart, other Labour Party insiders told the Salford Star that the actions against councillors were an attempt "to crush any opposition to him". Now, with Paul Dennett in the job for less than a fortnight, things don't appear to have changed.

Following the Paul Wilson debacle, when he had the whip removed but was subsequently cleared on appeal by the Labour Party Regional Board, the Salford Labour Party was ordered to have, what the panel called a "health check" by the Local Government Association...

"There was supposed to be an external investigation into the Party but that seems to have been shoved under the table" said the Labour Party source "Some are now asking what happened to that investigation and are not getting any answers."

This week sees the 50th anniversary of the start of Chairman Mao's vicious purge of opponents, known as the Cultural Revolution. Many in Salford Labour Party are now wondering what lessons have been learnt...'

I already see Mayor Dennett stamping his plan for the future on Salford. Excellent. Personally I would not have Cllr Bulkin in the inner ring. Planet Mars would be more suitable I would think as it has no email facility to cause him any problems.

The reality of Labour in Salford? this is what happens when power is placed in the hands of a few. We surely must be witnessing implosion a party fractured and breaking apart, its a real shame we never seem to witness stories like this pre election where the faux stories of unity abound in the press while the reality is much different. The people have spoken sadly this is what we are left with Councillors fighting like rabid dogs for a bone.

A couple of well-known adages seemingly applicable to the current state of Salford Council Labour group: - All power corrupts all and absolute power corrupts absolutely. - An house divided against itself cannot stand.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
