While the social justice radar has rightly been set on Ordsall and Langworthy, with the areas' horrendous levels of child poverty, income deprivation and unemployment, today the Salford Star focuses just across the road, on Salford Quays and MediaCityUK where levels of deprivation are also reaching scary heights...
According to the latest official Government Indices of Deprivation, 2015, the Salford Quays neighbourhood, or LSOA (Lower Super Output Area), is ranked 2,927 out of 32,844 neighbourhoods in England, amongst the 10% most deprived in the country for the Living Environment Deprivation Domain.
This measures the quality of the local environment, and includes the 'indoors' living environment which is the quality of housing, and the 'outdoors' living environment which covers air quality and road traffic accidents. The Quays is also within the 20% most deprived areas in the country for Health Deprivation and Disability, within the 30% most deprived areas for Barriers to Housing and Services Deprivation, and within the 30% most deprived areas for Income Deprivation Affecting Older People.
The Quays features badly in four out of nine categories of deprivation.
Meanwhile MediaCityUK itself, a different neighbourhood on these indices, is ranked 4,479 out of 32,844 LSOAs in England, placing it within the 20% most deprived areas in England for Barriers to Housing and Services Deprivation, which measures `physical proximity of local services' and 'wider barriers' which includes `issues relating to access to housing such as affordability and homelessness'. Media City is also amongst the 30% most deprived areas in the country for Living Environment Deprivation.
Today, we ask Salford people to spare a thought for the poor souls living and working on the Quays and in MediaCityUK , who were promised so much in Peel Holdings' sterile palace and yet have found themselves living with deprivation levels harking back to Dickensian times. And they can't even swear when they read such shocking news, because they will get slapped with a £1,000 fine under Salford Council's Public Spaces Protection Order!
...Luckily, there are very few Salford people working at the BBC or at MediaCityUK, so we have to be grateful for small mercies...
