550 pupils from Christ Church CE Primary School and Lewis Street Primary School, waved palms and paraded through the streets of Patricroft yesterday, led by two children representing Jesus riding on donkeys, plus the Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Revd Dr David Walker, carrying a huge wooden cross.
Parents and residents lined the route, which went from Lewis Street to Christ Church, where children read prayers they had written and sang songs by Manchester bands. There was also an exhibition of ace Easter donkey artwork by Year 6 pupils, inspired by the vivid images of artist Marc Chagall *
"We try to give children the experience of Holy Week, as opposed to sitting in a classroom listening to it from a book" explained Wendy McCormack, Executive Headteacher of both schools "So we build up to it by doing artwork and talking about what Holy Week and the Passion means; and we do music by Manchester artists, like Oasis.
"The inspiration is from when it was done live in Manchester a few years ago, and this is the second time we've done this bi-annual event" she added "It's been fantastic, they love it and when we go through the streets people come out of their houses. It creates a bit of a buzz in the area and makes people think about Holy Week and Easter Weekend. It's been really good."
*The pupils worked with local artist, Hannah Brown, in creating an art exhibition influenced by Norman Adams and Marc Chagall. The art exhibition will be on display in Christ Church for the next three weeks.
