Award winning playwright, Tess Humphrey, brings her new farce, The Lionheart Phantom, about `life, death and things that go bump in the night' to the Salford Arts Theatre for three nights, beginning 17th March.
"Wendy's gay bar, The Lionheart, is on its last legs: they are empty on Pride night, there are rats in the fuse box, and one of their bedrooms has three walls" she explains "Things are looking grim, until her son accidentally starts the rumour that the pub is haunted. Suddenly, they are inundated with customers hoping to catch a glimpse of something spooky. But how long can the team keep the `haunting happening?"
The Lionheart Phantom is being staged by Grand Dame Theatre, set up in 2015 aiming `to give local communities thought provoking drama through accessible theatre'. One of its founders is Sam Hart who is also directing this latest play...
"For me theatre is a vehicle for progress" he says "It's a rare thing to see 'queer theatre' meshed with family friendly farce. Set in Manchester's iconic Canal Street, the Lionheart Pub dares the audience to confront their own life goals and mortality to the accompaniment of classic camp songs and feel good anthems.
"The piece is otherworldly and feels as though it could be a flip-side of our own world, with the character James having the struggle of coming out as straight to his lesbian mothers" he adds "Love, family, grief and drag are explored throughout this fast paced, camp farce..."
