"I believe art to be the people's media; through which we can tell our untold stories, share organic truths, educate each other and unite in our humanity" Potent Whisper
As hundreds of thousands of people converged on the Conservative Party Conference last October to oppose every policy the Government had up its sleeve, the real life scenes made a perfect backdrop for a video to promote a new rap track by spoken word artist Potent Whisper and harp pioneer, Maria-Christina.
Potent Whisper is building a growing reputation, with thousands of YouTube plays, and radio, tv and live shows all over the place, as he combines succinct sounds with social justice commentary on everything from Trident to Brixton housing... `They're all moving in to boot us out; they want to loot the town'...
Although Potent Whisper is from the south, as some Madchester star once said, `It's not where you're from, it's where you're at'... And the sentiments expressed - `bringing the bars in, to spar with the devil...I'm bringing the PM, the PM and having him up NOW' – reverberate throughout the country...
A live appearance on the square near the Tory Conference was filmed and spliced with footage of demos, police marksmen and the Jeremy Corbyn and Artist Taxi Driver appearances at Manchester Cathedral – and the result is an atmospheric, foreboding film where art meets protest somewhere over the black rainbow of GMex...
"Conservative policies are killing thousands of people in this country" says Potent Whisper "For me, this song is simply about making the decision to act...to oppose the Tories... to create the world we want to live in... and to highlight the urgency required. Hence the title, 'NOW'.
"The song was written and recorded before we were invited to perform at the demonstration, but we knew the demo would provide the perfect visuals to match the tone of the music and the lyrics; shooting the video there was an easy decision to make" he adds "Giving thanks to Manchester Angels for inviting us to perform and to video production company Global Faction for making the trip with us to Manchester. The show was in a square and we were blessed to perform to a beautiful, fiery crowd who met us with a whole bunch of righteous energy."
Anyone listening to the track could be forgiven for thinking there's a whole band backing the rap but every sound was made by Maria-Christina, who is taking harp playing to new heights
"Believe it or not, every sound that you hear on the track was played by Maria-Christina on her harp" Potent Whisper explains "As people will continue to discover in future releases, she has a hundred and one different ways to manipulate her harp, producing some incredibly versatile sounds; she's a real innovator in that respect."
That something so fresh is being combined with a political, pacifist protest ethic can only be good for British music. So how important is it that music carries a social message?
"Hugely" he responds "We're living in a time when the mainstream media serves only the interests of the establishment; where artists on the payroll are paid to manufacture public opinion, to legitimize murder and solidify division.
"I believe art to be the people's media; through which we can tell our untold stories, share organic truths, educate each other and unite in our humanity" he adds "I don't want to create art, I want to create the world I want to live in, through art..."
