GREATER MANCHESTER HOTEL BEDROOM TAX TO HELP HOMELESS
|
|
Star date: 29th January 2016 A HOTEL BEDROOM TAX COULD PROVIDE HOUSING FOR HOMELESS "This is a brilliant idea" Street Support Salford and Manchester Behind closed doors, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) is discussing the idea of implementing a hotel bedroom tax which it states "could be used to fund particular strategic initiatives". `Strategic initiatives' usually means prestige projects. Today the Salford Star is calling for a hotel bedroom tax to be introduced to build affordable housing for the area's homeless people. Full details here...

One of the biggest issues in Salford and Manchester recently has been the growing numbers of people sleeping rough on the streets, squatting in unsafe or private buildings, or being evicted from homeless camps – brought to a head this month with the murder of homeless Daniel Smith under the arches in New Bailey. In Salford, the number of official rough sleepers is 14 but the real figure is probably four times this, and most are sleeping in the shadows of prime real estate, where Salford City Council is backing a car park that cost £12million, huge new office blocks, unaffordable housing and hotels (see previous Salford Star article – click here). Meanwhile, behind closed doors, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has, this month, been discussing the possibility of introducing a hotel bedroom tax as part of the region's devolution deal which will give added powers to raise local income to an elected mayor. A GMCA report states that the hotel bedroom tax "could be used to fund particular strategic initiatives". Judging by the form of Salford City Council, `strategic initiatives' usually means prestige projects like fountains, bridges, riverside walkways and £19million gardens. Today, the Salford Star is calling for the implementation of a hotel bedroom tax to fund the building of affordable housing for the area's homeless people, run by the community for the community, and involving all the various grass roots organisations that are currently on the streets supporting rough sleepers. "I think this is a brilliant idea" says Angela `Penny' Barratt of Street Support Salford and Manchester, who has been working with homeless people for over four years. The idea of a hotel bedroom tax, or tourist tax, is not new and has already been implemented in the world's major capital cities such as Rome, Amsterdam, Paris and New York. In London, Dame Tessa Jowell has already floated the idea, while in Edinburgh the Unite City of Edinburgh Council Branch has called on its members to campaign for such a tax... "People from all cultures and countries visit our capital city" it states "We want to open up our city and welcome our visitors. However we do not believe that it unreasonable to ask for a small contribution from those who use the city's privately owned hotels so as we can ensure...A high quality, publicly run and publicly accountable, city infrastructure that works for residents and visitors alike." Visitors to Manchester and Salford are currently met with more and more people living on the streets. A small hotel bedroom tax could help alleviate this problem. Tessa Jowell called for a one per cent tax, while Unite Edinburgh argued that "£2-£5 per night is hardly prohibitive"... Such taxes around the world vary from 5.5% in Amsterdam, to 18.27% in New York City, and raise £millions to help local residents. In Salford huge hotels have received planning permission recently – at MediaCityUK and in Central Salford, with developers avoiding £100,000s in planning fees. A tax to be paid either by the hotels or by their guests would go a long way towards putting something back into the city. The Salford Star believes that the imposition of a hotel bedroom tax is inevitable at some point, once an elected mayor has been installed in Greater Manchester. We also believe that by the time residents get to hear about it the GMCA `strategic initiatives' will have already been set in stone for prestige projects. The community must have an input into this process – and what better way than to campaign for any hotel bedroom tax money to be used for housing the growing number of homeless people? Today the Salford Star urges all campaigners against homelessness, charities, residents, trade unions and political parties to begin calling for these aims... "Paying tax is not a burden. It is the subscription we pay to live in a civilised society" Jeremy Corbyn

| Sounds JUST LIKE the
HEART of Manchester BID
http://cityco.com/heartofmanchester/our-bid/
"A great city, striving to be greater still
Manchester city centre has gone from strength to strength. Visitor numbers are up, sales are bucking national trends. But we haven’t reached our full potential. Manchester is a world-famous destination for many reasons, and now by working in partnership to launch the Heart of Manchester BID, businesses have the opportunity to strengthen the city’s appeal even further.
The city centre is not immune to competition, economic challenges or changing trends, but with the BID focusing on making Manchester as vibrant as we know it can be, visitors will want to visit and have more reasons to stay longer.
As the city grows; with expanding transport infrastructure, new property, public realm and cultural developments, this is our time to harness the city’s positivity and look to the future.
The BID means an extra £1million will be invested in the city centre per year, for the next 5 years.
The Heart of Manchester BID aims to:
*Attract footfall into the retail district from more ABC1 audiences
*Help retailers do better business through operational and security support
*Deliver high quality public events
*Offer a warm, knowledgeable welcome to the city
*Deliver ongoing positive PR for the city centre
"
More positive PR needed then for this Warm, Knowledgeable, high quality ABC1 audiences? |

| Pity UKiP drags out again their retired RAF pilot who quickly fell to earth after slitting the vote against Barbara Keeley in Worsley General election and caused the Tory Iain to lose to the woman. Is it much surprise the retired RAF pilot pulls facts from 50 years ago in his comment. Owen, take a pill it is The Future of Salford not the past of Harold Wilson that will count as you again let Labour win. |

| Sorry but this idea has been tried before and was a disaster. Harold Wilson introduced a "Selective Employment Tax" on service industries in 1966 and the result was that thousands of waiters, bar staff and receptionists lost their jobs. Leave the many charities in Manchester dealing with homelessness to assist the "rough sleepers" They have the funds, compassion and perseverance which is lacking in the official response. Instead put pressure on your council to build more homes and let them to LOCAL people. OWEN HAMMOND Official UKIP candidate for City of Salford Mayor election MAY 5th 2016 |

| @ the star, what's it got to do with the hotel bedroom tax, absolutely nothing. But it is just as important, don't you think. But then again, what they both have in common is councils and councillors who have the power to change things for the better of these groups of people, but don't because they don't give a damn. On Paul Wilson, I think Paul has had to much time to try and come up with answers to some of the questions he has been asked, he should have answered them on here as people put them to him, don't trust him or his party. As the saying go's , forewarned is forearmed and don't forget we had the same bullshit promises about being open, democratic, and putting salford people first from Ian Stewart and look where that got the people of salford, a Labour Party controlled council that is totally against its electorate. Ps. When was the last time that any labour leader of this council put the people of this city first, so isn't it time to think outside the box and elect someone who isn't part of the Labour Party. Why should the salford Labour Party stop ignoring the people of salford or stop being involved in shady dealings that are not in the interest of the people of salford, if the people of salford keep voting labour in, if we the people are not going to change our vote, then why should the Labour Party stop being ignorant and corrupt. @ star ask Paul Wilson, why did he stop coming on here and refused to answer some of the questions put to him, after all we are the ordinary everyday people he should be speaking to, he won't meet us sitting in the town hall or are the questions we pose, to difficult to answer. |

| Stupid Idea. This deflection by Labour says it is doing nothing direct from the vast cash amount of Council Tax collected. Instead it is going to tax travelers through Manchester rather like old Dick Turpin. Over in Salford, Labour has now announced only 3 names on its short list balloting paper:- Wilson v Jones v Dennett. Will Red Labour have the balls to tell us who else was nominated? I hear its high command decided to reject names put forward from members. And the 800 Labour ordinary members in Salford think they have transparancy and openness. Think again - Labour is a joke. |

| See David Cameron's comment below...Firstly, you'll be pleased to know that we are interviewing Cllr Wilson today (the other Labour Mayor contenders wouldn't be interviewed) and, secondly, what the hell has this comment got to do with a hotel bedroom tax??? |

| Thought people might to know what salford council intend to do. Still no word from our weaste and seedley coward councillor " Paul Wilson" maybe he'd like to comment on his Labour Party stopping this bus....
The school run can be a nightmare, so for children with special educational needs in Salford, there’s a bus to help. But maybe not for much longer - the council want to axe this important service. [1] Noreen, a 38 Degrees member, knows how difficult it will be for families if this service is cut - so she’s fighting to save it.
Salford Council will be voting soon on plans that would leave some of Salford’s children struggling to get to school. [2] The council have tried to keep the plans quiet - they know it’s an unpopular move. [3] So a huge people-powered petition would show the council that they can’t get away with slipping this cut through.
If you believe that Salford Council should help all children get to school safely, please sign Noreen’s petition now. It only takes a few seconds:
SIGN THE PETITION
Here’s what Noreen has to say:
“A year ago my adult sons lost their transport when Salford's mayor decided they did not fit their criteria to keep it. Now we have to transport them ourselves, and this has taken its toll on our own health.
“Now they’re looking to stop children’s coaches which get them to their schools. Our children need this service. It’s vital to give them a better future, and it is also needed for parents to give them that little bit extra respite so they can relax and know that their children are in safe hands on the way to and from school.”
Please add your name to Noreen’s petition here - it only takes a few seconds:

Noreen started her petition on the Campaigns By You website. If there’s another issue in Salford that’s close to your heart, start a campaign here: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/visit-cby
Thanks for being involved,

| This idea is excellent. It is used in South Africa when tourists go to Saffari Parks. They are informed that there is a compulsory donation to be given to the local community, in addition to the entry fee. Same idea, different location. if someone can pay for a hotel a little extra for the less wealthy wouldn't hurt and gives out a message. Just think, when the Tories come for their conference and stay in the Midland Hotel, such a policy might make them think! Just a little taste of their own medicine! |
