Salix Homes has, this afternoon, announced a financial support package for Salford flood victims in which claims of up to £350 per month can be made.
The housing association, which owns around 80% of the affected houses on Spike Island and around John Street in Lower Broughton, states that it will backdate payments to Boxing Day, when the worst flood in a generation hit the city.
Salix is to pay £50 per week to tenants, "To help you with the disturbance of living in your home until we have fully repaired it". The payment is for those who have stayed in their homes and are paying full rent either directly or via housing benefit.
The company is also to pay £50 per month to cover additional energy costs as most people have had their heating on constantly in attempts to dry out houses. The payments are for those who have stayed in their homes and will continue until the property is signed off as fully dry.
Finally, Salix is to begin installing dehumidifiers in houses from Monday, and will pay £25 per week for the cost of running the machines which have to be kept on all the time.
Leaflets went out to households today with a Flood Claim Form attached to fill in and return to the Flood Support Centre, which is at the RITA House, 89 Heath Avenue. The Centre will be opening tomorrow, Saturday 9th January 9:30am-4pm to receive the forms, and will be open on Monday and all next week. Forms can also be picked up from the Centre. Proof of ID and an address (such as a utility bill) must be provided for Salix to process the form.
