SALFORD STAR MARY BURNS AWARDS 2015:

SALFORD COUNCIL WINS TREVI FOUNTAIN AWARD

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the ninth annual Salford Star Mary Burns Awards, which are given out to honour the most deserving individuals and organisations in the city for their stupid statements, dodgy dealings and iffy activities over the past twelve months.

Spending money like water has often been a prerequisite for winning a Mary Burns Award but spending money on water? Well what can we say? Except to ask you to piddle your pants, pop your Evian corks and spray to the heavens for the winner of the Trevi Fountain Award... Salford City Council!

TREVI FOUNTAIN AWARD

Goes to...

Salford City Council

Like who needs Rome's Trevi Fountain when we've got Greengate Square?  The controversial fountain, plus square, plus public footbridge (when there was already one there) cost £13.3million of public money and was opened a few years ago.

Earlier this year, the Salford Star revealed that Salford Council had spent a further £219,065 over twelve months on payments to Capital Properties for the management of Greengate Square and its fountains – that's over £4,000 a week!

In September, Salford Council paid Capital Properties a further £37,500 plus £9,000 `miscellaneous expenses'. Which we're sure will be joy to the ears of all those getting gushing cuts to their public services this year.

Greengate Square is definitely not the Trevi Fountain but is certainly financially aspiring to it. So, ladies and gentlemen, splash your cash, unlock your inner Ekbergs and drain your council tax for the winner of the Salford Star Mary Burns Trevi Fountain Award...

Salford City Council!!!

An observation! Every time I pass this Square on the bus, which now has to circle it, I register the number of people using it for a rest, for the kids to play in the water spurts or even just to buy a cuppa at the little kiosk. Of course now is not the time for this but I have been observing since last spring. My conclusion is that it has failed to attract anyone. It is a 'great expectations' failure, with ugly spikes, celebrating nothing and certainly not architectural beauty. I'm glad some trees were planted. We can rely on Nature to reduce the ugliness. Gets my vote!

Interesting thought Winston but way off the mark. If all Councillor expenses and other staff expenses were ended tomorrow it would be but a drop in the ocean compared to what is needed. I'm intrgued as to what expenses you think staff can claim. Essential car user allowance has pretty much gone. Car sharing and pooling have probably reduced casual car user expenses to negligible so what else do you think there is? The real tragedy is throwing money at all the things people have been complain on here about for years and the lack of a credible opposition.

See Inside Out's comments below... We had this story in 2011 re Salford merging with Manc-land http://salfordstar.com/article.asp?id=1046 and the lack of Gtr Manc democracy was in the print issue. We'll re-visit if you want?

The more interesting story here is why Salford would be putting any money into Greengate when Manchester City Council list Greengate and Irwell Riverside as part of their city centre as well as having extended Spinningfields across the Irwell past the Mark Addy. Have a look at their city centre strategy consultation document. The Salford/Manchester border is being removed and no-one is asking why or how this links into Georges Northern Powerhouse or questioning the existence of the unelected AGMA and GMCA. Far more of a worry than any aspect of this story.

I worked at the council and I do believe that if council managers and (some) councillors were as penny-pinchingly, arse-achingly, pedantically ‘diligent’ with public money as they are with their personal expense claims, the council wouldn't need cuts and they could even have saved the cranes. Maybe even have enough left over for the badly needed ‘mayor improvement scheme’

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO STOP THE STAR

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
