SALFORD COUNCIL PAYING OVER £200,000 FOR GREENGATE SQUARE FOUNTAINS MANAGEMENT
|
|
Star date: 26th March 2015 CASH-STRAPPED COUNCIL PAYS OVER £4,000 A WEEK FOR FOUNTAINS MANAGEMENT As more cuts to the city's vulnerable people begin to bite, over the last twelve months Salford City Council has paid out £219,065 to a company called Capital Properties to manage Greengate Square and its fountains. This works out at over £4,000 a week. The fountains and the Greengate Square public space originally cost £13million of public money. Full details here...

As parents and carers of disabled adults struggle to get their sons and daughters to day centres now that most of the Salford Council transport has been cut, we're sure they will be delighted to know that £219,065 has been spent over the last twelve months on the management of Greengate Square and its fountains. Salford Council paid the money - in four instalments of £37,500 and one of £69,065 - to Capital Properties to maintain the fountains and host events like gourmet food markets and the Dig The City festival. The Council figures don't record whether any income was received. The space can be rented for £500 a day. Greengate Square was opened two years ago and cost £13.3million of public money to build, with the Council chipping in around £1.5million. The space is now costing over £4,000 a week to maintain. "Manchester is a thriving city which attracts considerable amount of investment and Greengate Square helps draw some of that in to Salford" Mark Burgess, managing director of Manchester based Capital Properties told the Salford Star "Capital Properties has been working closely with Salford City Council to help establish Greengate Square as a focal point of the local community. This includes the provision of free activities for locals and tourists, such as pop-up urban farms in school holidays and street food festivals, to managing the contracting of cleaning and maintenance. "The city of Salford is leading the way in establishing vibrant leisure, business and community districts and local businesses and residents are reaping the benefits of these through improving economies and engaged communities" he added. After slashing transport for disabled adults last year, Salford Council is now aiming to cut £190,000 from services for children with disabilities, with a `review' of `personalised budgets linked to needs assessments'...£219,065 seems a small price to pay for some lovely fountains and gourmet markets.

| Not wishing to be funny - but I do wish the money men around our city would invest in a MAP! Secondly, I keep reading (Not only on this page, but on certain MEN titles that let the Politicos loose) that its all the labour councils fault - i'm not going to let the council off - but its blooming rich of certain areas/ex-councillors screaming about the stable door being open when the horse has bolted...and if it is the fault of labour - are you calling the majority of Salfordians fools ? as they keep voting them in ? Perhaps if other parties came up with proper costed solutions that don't involve selloffs and shutting places left right and centre we might have a city to be proud of - but No alternative is no solution at all - provide an alternative and you might find you get an effective opposition (even though the tories aren't even standing in certain wards) |

| I am making a generous offer to Salford council to invest in creating a vibrant new public space in the heart of the city. I have purchased a water feature that consists of small wall or cascading water, with several frogs sitting on it. To highlight this impressive piece of art I have also purchased 24 solar lights from a shop on Salford precinct. As these and the water feature are quite small, I have some binoculors that I can let you have for £5,000 a pair. These can be rented out to visitors and will therefore pay for themselves. My proposal is to site this innoventive design at the entrance to the Civic centre so it can be enjoyed daily by hard working councillors. I am offering to manage and maintain this spectacular showpiece for £3,000 a week although if you sign up for a year you get a discount and I will do it for £156,000 a year.

| It is good that the "radical" Salford Star keeps pointing out how the council wastes money.
Most people thing think that greengate square is in Manchester anyhow so I cannot see it being a "focal point of the local (SALFORD) community."
HOW?HOW?HOW do you manage to spend £13,300,000 or £13.3 millon on flagging over the old Victoria bus station, sticking up 2 crap bits of modern sculpture, ie those stainless steel pointy things, and a few bits of pipe sprinkling water about? It is not exactly Trevi fountain or the gardens of Versailles is it?
Put that on you tourist bucket list, Palace of Versailles,Trevi fountain, Greengate Square.
Do the idiots a the council who come up with these things get an allowance for there red noses and oversized shoes? |

| I think everyone is Salford should spend some time and look at what this council spends month after month. If you go on Salford spends over £500 it makes very interesting reading |

| Well it’s nice to see money well spent on a Salford Beauty spot that’s well used
What a load of rubbish this money could have been used for a lot better things like helping vulnerable adults, transport services, and his next project to destroy the children services, so instead of paying £4,000 a week to maintain these wonderful fountains that every body flocks to see give it to the vulnerable and needy of Salford Star date: 6th March 2013. (With incredible insensitivity, Salford City Mayor Ian Stewart rejoiced in the opening of the £13million Greengate Square and fountain, the day after formally passing £23.4million of cuts at a Salford Council meeting (see here) which would bring, he said, "great suffering, real hardship for the people of Salford and their families With food served by posh people's palace, Harvey Nichols, the opening, which was not publicised – perhaps to avoid demonstrations by anti cuts protesters - was attended by `potential developers, investors, funders and users'.) Taken this from your archives, so what happened to the money `potential developers, investors, funders and users' was supposed to have generated seems this was another lost cause. Just fat cats getting fatter

| Sad how each week through what ever means the star highlights the gross failings of a Labour run Council, without it's watchful eye I would fear what went on. Knowledge is a powerful tool the only sadness is the star is confined to the net if in the future it takes to print I hope it can offer it's news to a wider mass. I often feel that if stories like this along with the hundreds printing over the years where to gain the eyes of a wider section of our community we would not be in the position we find ourselves today of a Labour council allowed through the weakness in the opposition to waste so much of our much needed cash on shameful projects like this which we could only add to the every growing list of labours white elephants. Lets hope in May the apathy which dogs this city takes a back seat and the people finally see sense. |
