"My goal has always been to punch my way out of the trauma zone into the light..." says Lydia Lunch, all round art aggressor and mother of madness, whose work has seeped through music, books, films, photography and a poetry of emotions.
From today, 24th October, the yank legend is at Salford's Islington Mill for a two week residency working with around forty local musicians, artists and performers, and featuring in three live performances.
Lydia will be running two workshops, From the Page to the Stage, while collaborator, Weasel Walter, will run a third entitled The Art of Improvisation. The live shows begin on Tuesday 27th October with Lydia Lunch and Weasel Walter's Horrible True Confessions, a text based multimedia performance creating `an intimate, terrifying and even hilarious evening of musical verite'...
Also performing on the night are Deadly Orgone Radiation, Asian Babes (four
non-Asian babes from Cumbria') and Manc punk/garage/hardcore outfit Denim and Leather. Maxine Peake will also be doing a DJ set
Saturday 31st October sees the Lydia Lunch Halloween Seance in which the Queen of Doom enters the realm... "Expect the unexpected as the building gets taken over by wytches and you enter into the occult of Islington Mill" state the organisers. Islington Mill gallery will also be transformed into a wytches coven movie theatre showing The Craft, Witches of Eastwick, Hocus Pocus and, er, The Witches.
Also appearing are Pins who play `noisy, pop-influenced, guitar-led music'; Water - `a heady mix of artists, poets and musicians who've come together to create encounters which engulf the senses'; and Manc band, ILL who `fly into pure expression until euphoric heavy jump up and down noise is created'.
Finally, on Tuesday 3rd November, there's the culmination event of the residency,
From the Page to the Stage Live, a show by the those who took part in the residency, with Lydia sharing her vision and framing a process designed to `encourage creativity and collaboration as an important means of artistic expression and personal growth'...
For anyone who has experienced the work of Lydia Lunch, from her thirty albums (including with Teenage Jesus and the Jerks and the seminal 80s offering Queen of Siam), to her books, poems and photographs, this a once in a Salford lifetime chance to get down with a true legend of art adventure.
