A close up of a mite in a bathroom rug, a honey bee's anus and a burst bubble are just some of the one hundred mad images that make up an unique exhibituin at the University of Salford's MediaCityUK campus from tomorrow, Monday 19th, until 30th October.
The exhibition is part of the Manchester Science Festival and features the winners of an international competition run by the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), in turn part of Siemens' Curiosity Project, a three-year engagement programme which aims to engage young people with science and engineering.
"We were not concerned so much with technical detail, but more about how viewers were engaged with the image – the 'wow' factor" says Gary Evans, RPS exhibition coordinator says "In addition we wanted them to ask `What is it?' and question what they were looking at. The images are amazing and getting the kids to guess what they are will be a lot of fun this half term."
Some of the photos are pretty gruesome, like dissected hearts, but others show the beauty in the everyday, including Water Drop Collision by Ken Rohling and Bathroom Rug Carpet Beetle Larva by Daniel Kiriko (if you like that sort of thing). And never before has a bee's anus looked so artistic!
The exhibition is free and will also be on show during the Science Jam on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th October at the Media City campus - `an extravaganza of talks and interactive activities for all the family including Gary Evans showing visitors how to film slow motion photography using an Iphone'...
