SALFORD COUNCIL ASSISTANT MAYORS AXED IN MAYORAL SHAKE UP

Star date: 23rd September 2015 ASSISTANT MAYOR TITLES SCRAPPED BUT STILL 13 `EXECUTIVE AND SUPPORT' MEMBERS Salford City Mayor, Ian Stewart, has announced an `Interim Mayoral Team' in which the title of `Assistant Mayor' has been ditched in favour of the same number of `Executive Lead Members' and `Support Members'. Salford City Mayor, Ian Stewart, has ditched the title of `Assistant Mayor' from most of his 13 strong posse – and replaced them with the same number of `Executive Lead Members' and `Support Members' in his `Interim Mayoral Team'. Sacked from the `Interim Mayoral Team' are International Relations `Assistant Mayor', Stephen Coen, and Adult Services and Services for Older People `Assistant Mayor', Peter Connor, while the posts for Culture and Stewart's ludicrous `Humanegement' invention have also been axed. The `Interim Mayoral Team' now consists of Deputy Mayor, David Lancaster, plus two surviving Strategic Assistant Mayors, Paula Boshell (Executive Lead Member for Adults and Paul Dennett (Executive Lead Member for Innovation, Growth and Prosperity). Below them are the same councillors who were Assistant Mayors, now titled `Executive Lead Members'... John Merry (Children's Services, Learning and Skills); Gena Merrett (Housing and Environment); Derek Antrobus (Strategic Planning); Bill Hinds (Finance and Customer Services); Lisa Stone (Health and Wellbeing) and Roger Jones (Transport). There are also four `Support Members'... John Ferguson (Adults); Ann-Marie Humphreys (Housing and Environment); John Mullen (Finance and Customer
Services) and John Walsh (Health and Wellbeing). Altogether, a team of 13 - replacing a team of 13, who last year cost Salford City Council almost £200,000 on top of their basic councillor allowances. Whether the new system will lead to any cuts in payments to the `Executive Lead Members' and `Support Members' remains to be seen. At last week's full meeting of Salford Council a new `Scheme of Allowances' was agreed for elected members under which payments can be "applied differently to provide greater flexibility to deal with peaks in workload and as a means to support succession planning and development." Amongst the conditions set out were that "Transparent criteria should be applied when allocating the allowance"; "There should be an identifiable task with defined outcomes and clear reporting arrangements"; and that "The allowance should be within the overall budget available". Again, it remains to be seen whether the overall budget for `allowances' is increased, decreases or stays the same. There are also some concerns that the Mayor will use the new `flexible' payments to secure support from councillors who might otherwise rebel against him. Meanwhile, the Salford Star awaits the `transparent criteria...when allocating the allowance'...

| Thank you White you make good points here. I can add that me being expelled by Doncaster Labour right wing for my human right (lefty) and community safety views you can conclude my "new love" is The Corbyn Factor. We expelled activists must work with Labour, our best hope for a diverse community inclusive society. That said, I support proportional representation and will continue to fight for England devolution, having had my family line live in England for over 400 years it sort of gives me good reason to seek common sense. |

| Our elected Salford Mayor probably has ‘given the job his best shot’, which many would argue wasn’t a very good shot. So we can do without him next time.
At the next mayoral election, perhaps we should stick with a Labour mayor; I would hate to find out what a Conservative would do given power and freedom.
However, it should be noted that Mr Corbyn has not been afraid to give posts to those who are not his natural allies. So wouldn’t it be a good idea for our next mayor to select a ‘cabinet’ of those with skills and expertise instead of the ‘old faithful’ brigade who’s skills are questionable?

| Thank you BrianF for asking. My own view is that our elected Salford Mayor has given the job his best shot and we should recognise that aspect. I believe with a quarter of Salford voters pitching for a Conservative Councillor our Mayor should recognise that. Overall, at this time and with the Corbyn factor we in Salford should stick with a Labour Mayor. |

| I'm just wondering if these people went to the same nursery and have since been playing with the same old Duplo model of Salford they were given in the nursery.

| Excellent to see our elected Mayor forming his new team, however we need to retain all the knowledge of those who previously held high decision posts. I also would like to see more political fluidity by at least one opposition Councillor getting a role. I hope now we have Jeremy Corbyn as the National Labour's leader we will see a better footing in Salford for Salford Council to work closer with the local Trade Unions. |

| Smoke and mirrors? surely at the end of his tenure the Mayor as realised that opposition parties will attack his jobs for the boys policy. Since when do we need a person in charge of international relation in a city!! and his assistant Mayor of made up name in charge of human resources was this thought up after one to many on a Saturday night out, it beggars belief. The amount of cash taken out of this city in allowances is mind blowing what of our assistant mayor in charge of Housing? what housing. But still people vote Labour surely we are reaping what we sew, and again what of our opposition within council they sit few in numbers but seem silent while this shambles rolls on like an unstoppable train. The people have a chance in May of next year for change more of the same or perhaps something different what we have is in reality an old boys club long in the tooth and past it's prime.It takes little to vote but many prefer to sit back and moan when Labour get back in, purely and simply due to apathy the tools are there for change I ask people to use them |

Does it really matter ?
A turd is a turd, and a brown noser is a brown noser.
£200,000 in "allowances" when services for the vulnerable and disabled are being cut is a disgrace.
Ian Stewart has his priorities all wrong,and the Labour run council ,sadly, only dance to Stewarts tune, and ignore the people of Salford.
We recently had the chance to change things,but didn't. Thats democracy for you. Unfortunately it doesn't always work. |

| This is a pointless exercise. The people of Salford will always vote in a Labour Council. The same now quite old councilers to carry on regardless of their failings of the past & present. The said councilors know this well & act accordingly. The people of Salford truly deserve what they vote for. It's all quite funny really but also tragically sad. |

| The whole thing is a farce, we didn't need them in the first place and we don't need them now. I have spoken to many people who had no idea that these people with grand titles existed without going into the logistics of the money they were "earning" Some people have no shame and they know who they are. |

| we have 13 assistant Mayors,who do what? I live in the Claremont ward, on the 16th June I sent the 3 ward Councillors the same email regarding ward problems,I sent the email 5 times in total. I never got ONE answer from any of the councillors. On the 28th of July I made a formal complaint to the Council. I had an interview with Ben Dolan. He said he would investigate and see if the 3 Councillors had broken their code of conduct. Well Guess what its ok to take their allowance of £10.000plus and to totally ignore their constituents. Because Mr Ben Dolan says its ok. So tomorrow I will be getting in contact with the ombudsman.This labour council have had to much of their own way for far to long. We need change in this city |
