It is estimated that one in 25 children are affected by a genetic disorder, and 30,000 babies and children are newly diagnosed in the UK each year. Some genetic disorders are apparent at birth while others are diagnosed at different stages throughout childhood, and sometimes into adulthood.
Yesterday was the twentieth Jeans for Genes Day, helping to raise money for the charity, Genetic Disorders UK, which aims to transform the lives of children with genetic disorders with care and support. Every year, people are asked to do something brave or daft, in jeans, to raise the Day's profile. And this year, Salford Synchronised Swimming Club members jumped into the fray by wearing their jeans while going through routines in the pool at Irlam and Cadishead Leisure Centre.
"It was great to be involved in raising awareness of Jeans for Genes Day" said SSSC Head Coach Jessica Fletcher "The girls had great fun taking part, although swimming a routine in jeans was very difficult! We support the fantastic research that takes place because of the fundraising from Jeans for Genes Day..."
Caroline Harding, Chief Executive of Jeans for Genes Day, added: "We've been overwhelmed by the support for Jeans for Genes Day over the last twenty years. Just by wearing jeans and making a donation, people have already helped us to raise millions of pounds to provide vital care and support for children with genetic disorders."
