While Salford City College has been paying huge salaries to managers and opening up new fancy buildings, it now wants to make huge cuts which include the dismantling of the Walkden Centre; the end of A Levels at every centre, except Pendleton; the loss of key counselling and mentor roles that have been shown to help students from more challenging backgrounds; e-learning instead of teachers; and increased fees for students, including a payment just to register.
Following protests last month outside the College, tomorrow, Monday 10th August, a Save Our Salford City College public meeting is taking place at Swinton Royal British Legion with speakers including Salford and Eccles MP Rebecca Long-Bailey, Paul Rossington of the National Union of Teachers, Adam Cachia, a Salford City College student and organiser of Save Salford City College, and Salford City UNISON Branch Secretary Steven North...
"Salford City College matters" says Steven North "It is the only sixth form college in the city. It is Salford's college. We aren't holding this meeting because we want to attack the college – we are doing it because we want it to continue to be a great college that can help people from all backgrounds achieve their potential.
"The loss of jobs and services and the introduction of e-learning to replace time spent with teachers would be a backwards step" he adds "Instead of working to make a financial surplus, the College should be protecting what it does well."
Jack Youd, Secretary, Salford TUC, explains: "Easily accessible further education is crucial to the personal development of young people and adult learners in Salford. Such a massive decision needs the consulation of the communities in Salford it will affect."
