Salford's John Cooper Clarke, Christopher Eccleston, Shaun Ryder and Bernard Sumner join a hacienda-load of liggers, Madchester lovers and journos on a new video paying tribute to Tony Wilson and coinciding with the eighth anniversary of the Factory Records founder's death.
Joining the Salford lot are the likes of Steve Coogan, Iggy Pop, Richard Madeley, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Mark Radcliffe, Rowetta, Johnny Jay, Terry Christian and Vini Reilly, all `reciting' lines from Mike Garry's poem, St Anthony: An Ode to Anthony H. Wilson. See the ace video here
The St Anthony poem, set to music by composer Joe Duddell (New Order, Elbow), is to be released as a single on 14th of August and features artwork by Peter Saville and a remix by Andrew Weatherall, with all profits going to The Christie Charitable Fund... "I first heard St Anthony the day before our Jodrell Bank Gig in July 2013. I thought it sounded fucking great" says New Order's Bernard Sumner.
Meanwhile, on Friday 14th August, at Wilson's old Granada Studios haunt, there's a live event from 7pm until 3am with a St Anthony Video Screening, Stories About Wilson Video Screening plus Mike Garry and the Cassia Quartet playing live, followed by sets from Mike Pickering and various DJs.
"In all the lionisation of Tony Wilson people forget that he could be a bit of plonker at times but that's what made him more loveable because we're all dicks at some time aren't we..." says Mike Garry
"We're hoping people will buy the single...Don't illegally download it 'cos if you do you're a tramp and are stealing out of cancer victims' mouths" he adds "when you buy that single you are donating to Christies Hospital...We also want to keep Tony's spirit alive."
St. Anthony: An Ode To Anthony H. Wilson will be available on Skinny Dog Records to download and to buy on CD and white 12", featuring the Weatherall remix on the B side, on Friday 14th August £4.99/£6.99 – full details click here
