SALFORD AUTHORITIES DECLARE WAR ON COMMUNITY IN CHAPEL STREET

SALIX, POLICE, TRADING STANDARDS, IMMIGRATION PILE INTO ISLINGTON ESTATE
It looks like Salford authorities have decalred war on the community in Chapel Street. Mo, who runs the Shalimar convenience store and is currently battling English Cities Fund for a new unit at Vimto Gardens, has been raided four times in the last few months by Greater Manchester Police, Salford Council Trading Standards and even the Immigration Office in what the community is calling harrassment.
Meanwhile, in an incredibly draconian move, families on the Estate have been told by Salix Homes that they face eviction if their kids associate with another kid.

"I smell a rat and someone's doing it for ulterior motives" says Sarah Millar, who has been organising the Islington Estate community to protest against the intransigence of English Cities Fund (ECf) in helping local trader, Mo, relocate his Shalimar convenience store into the new Vimto Gardens complex on Chapel Street.
For the past few weeks, the community has been gathering outside Mo's shop demonstrating against the ECf, which is an amalgamation of Legal and General, Muse Developments and the Government's Homes and Communities Agency, in partnership with Salford City Council.
Over £11million of public money has been supporting the development of Vimto Gardens yet Mo, who has served the local community for over thirty years and whose shop is due to be demolished as part of the redevelopment, has been constantly priced out of a new unit in the scheme (see previous Salford Star articles click here and click here).
Mo has not kept his gob shut about the perceived injustice and now, in what looks like blatant harassment and victimisation, his shop has been raided at least four times in the last few months by Greater Manchester Police, Salford Council's Trading Standards and even the Immigration Service. Yet nothing has been found untoward...
"It's just a joke to get him out of the shoip so they don't have to give him another unit" Sarah explains "The raids have never found anything, it's just harassment. The irony is that during the last regeneration they begged Mo to stay and serve the community. Now they are trying to force him out, as if thirty years counts for nothing."
As the Chapel Street protests continue every Saturday, local kids and their families are also coming under attack from community police and the freshly privatised Salix Homes.
Incredibly, at least three families have been issued with an Acceptable Behaviour Agreement from Salix, which forces kids to sign a document stating they "will not associate" with a certain young person on the Islington Estate and will not enter parts of the Estate. Parents are receiving letters stating this, adding that "the consequences of breaking this agreement have been made clear to you...this anti-social behaviour is a breach of your tenancy conditions"
In other words, families could be evicted if their kids go near another kid from the Estate. The letter from Salix Homes to parents concludes that the the situation is "being monitored by Greater Manchester Police" and "further action may be taken..."
"We're all under attack and under threat" says Sarah "But nobody seems to give a damn about it, nobody cares..."
* The Salford Star asked Salford City Council for a comment about whether the activities of its Trading Standards Department amounted to harassment. Salford City Council didn't respond.
* The Salford Star asked Salix Homes if its threats to families re kids associating with other kids were even legal, and for a comment on the now-privatised housing company's behaviour. Salix Homes didn't respond.

| I am somewhat confused by this Salford Star Story. Since 2006, I have proved that there is a conflict of interest between the Police, Salix Homes, and The Salford Council. Even though I held meetings with the tenants, and provided them with the evidence, no one was interested, and no one did anything to rectify the situation. Nine years later, and everyone is suddenly up in arms because their corner shop is closing. Had everyone on the Islington Estate taken action in 2006, then Mo, would not be in this predicament right now. The lesson to be learnt in this case, is strike while the irons hot. Don't ignore corruption because you think it will not effect you. Sooner or later, corruption effects everyone. All the ignorance of the councils corruption has now come back to bite everyone on the Islington Estate, in the backside. I and other activists did a sleep in at the Pendleton Police Station three weeks ago because of the conflict of interest between the Police, Salix Homes, and The Salford Council. However most of the Activists were from out of the city, which shows that no one from this city could be bothered to support us. This is why corruption is rife in Salford. Because the right people will not fight. It's what Einstein once said to the German State, when ignorance is in abundance, corruption will thrive. |

| Wow, what an irresponsible, cynical article. Unsurprising though to see the Star siding with those that wish to make life a misery for the ordinary, decent people on the Islington Estate. |

| @anonymous I assume your from Salix or the council, shame they will never comment to the Star when asked. If there was any sort or decency, transparency or accountability then we would not be reading so many damming storied on here. Mr Ian Sewerrat talked the big talk but the actions of him and the council speak volumes. One of only 3 councils under investigation by the ICO |

| The council should be doing a u turn and allowing him to have the shop he deserves it he has been here for 30 years and we shouldn't be protesting to get him a shop and as for the these kids are good kids not bad ones they don't do crime they sit on corners because there is nothing to do so if they were bad they would be doing crime all the time if one kid is a bad one the others shouldn't be given a name and put a badge on them because they now the lad if the lad is doing wrong and the others walk away isn't that a good thing because they know its wrong we shouldn't be getting this and there parents its wrong |

| I don't agree with half the stuff said in that story, especially the part about kids not bring able to go near other kids. The article fails to mention in that regard that what happens is that the child may have been involved in anti social behaviour order within a group and therefore given an order/asbo, this goes through dali homes also and the tenant ie the parent is earned that continuation of the child's anti social behaviour or breaking of the order can result in a tenant being evicted. The column writer needs more facts rather than mish mash of stuff haha |

| I was raised on chapel street and mo was the one who helped the community if we ever needed anything my mum still lives there and it is shocking how mo is being treated he deserves respect not to be bullied out i support him and the community will not look the other way the council need to know they do not have all the power we the people do and they will not win. |
