SALFORD COUNCIL TO EMPLOY PWC CUTS CONSULTANTS ON £165,000 FOR NINE WEEKS WORK

Star date: 22nd June 2015 PWC CONSULTANTS GET OVER £600,000 WORTH OF COUNCIL CONTRACTS IN 15 MONTHS Consultants PricewaterhouseCooper, or PWC, now appears to be running Salford City Council, as the Salford Star can reveal the company is about to take the total value of its contracts to over £600,000 within 15 months. PWC's latest Council consultancy job will be paying £165,000 for just nine weeks work on a `customer transformation project' with `financial savings clearly identified'. While inflation stagnates, consultants Pricewaterhouse Cooper, or PWC, are doing a fine line in mushrooming contracts. Last year, the company was awarded £78,000 by Salford Council to "support internal transformational work" for an eight week period (see previous Salford Star article – click here). Now PWC is set to be awarded £165,000 for nine week's work on a `customer transformation project'. Once this contract has been handed to PWC this week, it will take the company's total take from Salford Council since April 2014 to a staggering £627,810 (including work done on stock transfer etc). Last week, the Salford Star revealed that, while making huge cuts, the Council's internal Fat Cat officer spend had increased by almost £200,000 (see here). Now the spend on external Fat Cats is also increasing. And it's all being done in the name of making `savings'... The last contract to PWC was to make a `business case' for £18million of cuts by 2017/18, states a Council report. This latest contract, the report adds, "brings together these tier one business cases with Public Service Reform, and particularly the big ticket items around Health and Social Care, Early Years and Skills and Work; and the emerging GM devolution agenda... "Ensuring sufficient capacity and skills to deliver the scale of transformation, at the
pace necessary to realise service benefits and financial efficiencies, is crucial, given
the very real prospect of further in-year cuts" it daleks "There is now an urgent need for additional support for the customer transformation project (external and internal combined) in terms of quickly developing a detailed business case to clearly describe the scope of the project, deliverables and a detailed implementation plan with financial savings clearly identified." What does it mean? It means more cuts. And in this process PWC, the Council reckons, is `Value for Money'...

| Councillors can get a bus pass, get milage and get taxi/transport as an extra. They did get internet,not sure if they do now as most people have access to the net. I would not say councillors are doing it voluntary. When I was a councillor I looked on it as a job and hope I worked for my wages/allowance. I can't say ALL Councillors WORK for their money. I have now sent 5 emails all the same to our 3 ward Councillors on ward issues and haven't had a reply or just a " thank you" |

| Surely Wendy Olsen is mistaken.
Do not all councillors, bar five, receive an allowance of at least £10,181?
Does this not have to cover cover their transport costs as they can claim a milage allowance for car travel, a bus pass or a cycle allowance?
This doesn’t appear to be voluntary work. |

| Hi Wendy, If you are correct Labour will see new faces running our patch. Having been expelled from The Labour Party for 6 years in Ed Miliband's town for me being a community activist in fighting for improved road safety, I need to know what changes under any new leadership in how it listens instead of over reacts. Not having the ability to listen to grass root local activists has seen millions defect from Labour to UKiP and if their new leader is more of the same will see them as the third party within 10 years, making irrelevance of who gets maneuvered into the vacated chairs, be it National or Local. |

| The payments to PWC indicate that the fat cats at Salford Council are sterile and useless. What happened to the City Mayors promise that the new City Director "Slimy" Jim Taylor, Rochdales reject would turn the City round? |

| Michael most councillors get just enough to cover their transport costs.no more, so it is practically voluntary work at the entry level. These large extra deputy mayor payments buy a certain kind of loyalty. Facing the public is what these people are avoiding. Most hustings took place with very little Labour presence. labour act in secret in Salford. Party membership will be tiny.
You are wrong on one point. There will never be another Salford elected Mayor. Stewart is a lame duck and Tony Lloyd has already replaced him in the drivers seat. The whole ten cities are being merged. See Greater Manchester Combined Authority webpages. no more Salford births, nor Mayors, except silly ceremonial mayor role. We may even lose our wonderful Salford City council website.

| Hi Mary, good to read your post. I am sure if the Tory camp got its act together they could give old Labour bloody noses at the next Mayoral. Having met Karen Garrido at last Mayoral beauty contest I was impressed with her Salford wider ideas. I am sure Karen would make a great deputy Mayor but like all against Labour's stranglehold, I feel Salford needs fresh icons. Salford Star turned me into a floating voter and probably has moved enough voters to watch Labour brought judgement and shaking in their shoes. |

| Why are we paying officers and mini mayors to do the work,then paying this company as well.If the officers and mini mayors are not up to it,get rid.After all they keep going on about the cuts,well Mr mayor,think you could save a bob or two on your doorstep.

| Salford Council could pay PWC £10million but we will always know the strategy they produce is wrong for us Salford. The best way is for unpaid Mayor, volunteer deputy Mayors plus transparency and openness. I want to see our Tory Councillors standing up to Labour's current leadership that has got it wrong. Budget of Salford Council is enough to maintain all essential services plus all our appropriate care services. If Labour cannot manage us housekeeping budget they are not fit to keep running our house. |
