The event might be called Manchester's Improving Daily and the old songs being rediscovered might be the Manchester Broadsides, but there's plenty of Salford content going down at the historic Angel Pub on Angel Street in Manchester on July 5th.
Top roots band, Edward II will be launching their new CD EP, featuring three tracks with a unique Salford flavour. Victoria Bridge On A Saturday Night is an old song describing the raucous scenes on the bridge that connects Manchester to Salford, while it's backed with a reggae version of Ewan MacColl's more recent Dirty Old Town and a wazzed up version of Kersal Moor 1838, the song written for the famous Chartist demo (see previous Salford Star article click here).
Edward II will be performing some of these tunes and more at the all day event, produced by Band On The Wall, celebrating a collection of old 19th Century songs they've rediscovered and known as the Manchester Broadsides. The songs tell of hardship, politics, social justice and good times, and were originally printed on cheap paper and distributed at the markets around what is now the northern quarter of Manchester.
The event takes place in the garden to the side of the old Angel Inn, which features in the song The Soldiers Return, one of the most well known of the repertoire, while the poverty stricken Angel Meadows area, now redeveloped, was the historical stomping ground of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, who described the area as "hell upon earth...Everything here arouses horror and indignation..."
Giving an introductory talk and on hand throughout the day will be social archaeologist post grad David Jennings, while there will be exhibition displays graphically illustrating the history. The exhibition and presentations will start at 2pm with performances taking place between 4pm and 9pm starring Mark Dowding, Chris Pollington and Jennifer Reid. Edward II will be playing at 5pm and 8pm.
There'll be real ales and food served throughout the family friendly day at the Angel Pub event which is shaping up to be industrial revolution a go-go...
