Stephen Broadhurst, or Broady, specialises in depicting scenes and people from old Salford, usually in pastel and pencil, with his unique take on the subject and always with a drawing of his pet dog in the corner.
His exhibition at the Langworthy Cornerstone recently, featuring eighty original pictures, was incredibly popular and now he's moving the focus to Eccles, displaying over a dozen pictures related to the area at the Eccles Community Art Gallery in a series that he's called Eccles Cakes! And yes, there is a drawing of the Old Cake Shop.
"There's old bakeries, trains, buses, people in the streets and soldiers in the Drill Hall during the First World War" Broady says "They bring back a lot of memories for people."
Broady has also done portraits of virtually anyone who is famous in the city, from Shelagh Delaney to Freddy Davies. The works are for sale and he keeps the price affordable so that lots of Salford people can own an original.
The Eccles series are on display alongside charcoal portraits by Eccles-based artist Robert Lever, motor, aviation and city artwork from Peter Grove, and photographs titled Celebrating Eccles...Caring Eccles... taken by Salford Young Carers and Young Adult Carers.
