SALFORD COUNCIL BACKTRACKS ON TRADE UNION ATTACK

Star date: 19th May 2015 SALFORD COUNCIL HOLDS TALKS TO TRY AND RESOLVE UNISON ATTACK Salford Council yesterday began to backtrack on its attack on Salford City UNISON's elected Branch Treasurer, Ameen Hadi, as action was about to escalate against the Labour Council. A lobby of the Salford Labour Group of councillors, due to be held at 5pm, was postponed after the Council backed down for `a period of meaningful discussions'. The Council originally withdrew the right for the UNISON rep to represent his members but today he is back at the UNISON office doing just that. Full details here...

A lobby of the Salford Labour Group of councillors by trade unionists and community campaign groups, due to be held at 5pm last night, was dramatically postponed at the last minute after the Council backed down for `a period of meaningful discussions'. Instead, supporters of UNISON Branch Treasurer, Ameen Hadi, from all over Greater Manchester packed the Swinton British Legion to hear a joint statement by the Union and Salford Council which appeared to show the Council backtracking on its original vicious and unprecedented attack on the democratically elected rep (see previous Salford Star article for details – click here)... "The City Council and UNISON have agreed to a period of meaningful discussion and dates have been agreed" it stated "Both parties will use their best endeavours to reach a mutually agreeable outcome. During this time, established branch secondments will remain unchanged. At the conclusion of these discussions both parties reserve the right to reach their own decision on the next steps should this be necessary." This morning Ameen is back at work at the Salford UNISON office representing his members, as Salford Council appears to be retreating in the face of total opposition and anger from the trade union movement and community organisations...

| Democracy must always be fought for, but there is 'no smoke without fire'; often without any due sensitivity, tact or diplomacy, there have been concerns from both members and non-members alike about representation - TU rep works entirely for the resolve of a situation with positive outcome, and not merely in the vein of attack and bluster.

| So very glad that justice - the very justice that Ameen works for - has happened.
Now all that needs to happen is for Salford Councillors to learn that they were elected to serve and not to ignore the views of the people of Salford |

| Always willing to give the benefit of doubt, let us hope this was an oversight by our Council and that a closer improvement relationship with our Unions will be one positive outcome, building Salford's future. |

| Glad to see the Council has backed down. Ameed is basically doing the job he is paid to do and a good one at that. this 'power over others' by Salford Council has got to stop. Democracy is still very much alive in Salford by the people who pay their wages. |
