BROADY DEPICTS SALFORD FROM ALBERT FINNEY'S SHOP TO THE LANGWORTHY HOTEL

An exhibition of over seventy pictures by artist Stephen Broadhurst – or `Broady' – depicts old Salford in all its glory, from the Chinese Steps in Brindle Heath, to the Clock School in Whit Lane, Sutton Flats and loads more, including a whole series of Shelagh Delaney related portraits.

The pencil drawings are all for sale at affordable prices ranging from £25 to £40 and are on currently on show upstairs at The Cornerstone in Langworthy.

"I'm a Salford lad, born and bred" writes Stephen Broadhurst in the notes to his new exhibition, upstairs at The Cornerstone in Langworthy "I love Salford and all the memories I have of it. Growing up there was a lesson in life and people. Such a variety of colourful characters from all backgrounds of life. The past magnificence of its old buildings – all now sadly gone but they remain a core part of my very being..."

At the Cornerstone exhibition, Stephen Broadhurst, or `Broady', has brought old Salford back to life with over seventy pencil and coloured pencil drawings covering everything from the old Docks to Albert Finney's shop, to the Clock School in Whit Lane; plus portraits of local celebs like Freddie Davies and LS Lowry - who he acknowledges as an inspiration – and, downstairs, a whole array of Shelagh Delaney related pictures..

By most of the pictures there are also little comments from the artist which bring the places and faces back to life...

The Broadway: `This pub was down near the Docks off Trafford Road...We went in the `new' Broadway – Holts Ale!...Lovely with a chip barm!'

Chinese Steps: `These steps were down Brindle Heath Road...They featured in the film Taste of Honey...Apart from the railway arches this whole area has completely vanished. Only those who lived there and the few remaining photos testify it was ever there!'

Sutton Flats: `Everyone who lived here has nothing but fond memories. It had a real community spirit...'

Langworthy Hotel: `Recently knocked down. Famous people to visit the pub are Muhammad Ali, boxer... Gail Oakley, local! I went o her 21st birthday party here. Lovely old building, should never have been knocked down...'

The exhibition really is a tour around old Salford, with Broady's sad refrain echoing from virtually every picture... "It's all gone now".
