The Salford Star is to join around thirty other media groups for talks, workshops, campaigning and promotion at the Real Media gathering on Saturday 28th February at Friends Meeting House in Manchester.
Real Media is a new campaign network hosting a series of events and actions to campaign against mass media distortion and for public interest journalism, in the lead up to the 2015 elections and beyond.
Real Media has been set up by Real Fare, a project that aims to challenge myths about the welfare system, and the day will be examining the agenda of the mainstream media and things like the lack of coverage on issues like inequality, corporate power, fracking and privatisation.
"I couldn't think of a more ideal time than now for a gathering of independent media outlets and creative thinkers" says Samantha Asumadu, a speaker at the event and founder of Media Diversified "The behemoth that is the mass media has not served the people's interests for far too long. Let's talk and plan and then act."
Jamie Kelsey-Fry, contributing editor to New Internationalist magazine, who is also talking at the event, adds: "The time is ripe for a new platform of credible alternative media outlets that can make the corporate owned mainstream obsolete and show it for what it is, the servant to a system that is unjust, undemocratic, unsustainable and broken."
Other publications, bloggers, media organisations and campaigns taking part in the Real Media event include The Bristol Cable, Slaney Street (Birmingham), Manchester Mule, Occupy News Network, Occupy.com, Bella Caledonia, Red Pepper, Corporate Watch and Open Democracy.
Real Media is also planning an anti-Daily Mail week of action from 13th-20th March
