Electronic music from all over the world is to be celebrated at this year's Salford Sonic Fusion Festival, which takes place over four days between 19th and 22nd February in the two University of Salford campuses at MediaCityUK and Peel Park.
The Festival promises well off the wall sounds and experiences, plus a symposium theme of Zoomusicology and Bio-acoustics - `the interplay between animal, insect and human musics'. Now you don't get that at a One Direction concert – or maybe you do...
It's all incredibly cutting edge, left-field explorations in contemporary music, `blurring the boundaries between avant-garde classical, experimental electronic popular and improvised music'. Sonic experiences include immersive sound-art and audio-visual and interactive live works.
The first two days of the Festival are based at the University's MCUK campus and features a `Metanast curated' concert of electroacoustic and sound art; Patchwork Rattlebag, a Salford-based indie-electronic band, pianist Xenia Pestova and percussionist Evaristo Aguilar.
Events also include a live streamed trans-Atlantic performance between electronic musicians from the University of Salford and Columbia College Chicago, and an interactive table performance by Insook Choi.
The final two days are centred around the Peel Park and will feature performances from the John Bailey Quintet, the violinist Darragh Morgan, and world premiere performances from composers Marc Yeats and Christine McCombe featuring the Manchester Camerata.
The Festival closes in the University's Peel Hall, with the University of Salford's Brass Band, the Adelphi Contemporary Music Group, the Oldham Contemporary Music Group, International Nothing, plus DJ sets William Baldry, Freya Mitchell and Steve Hellier. Top of the bill will be a set from Zufallig, the latest indie/dance venture from ex-Death in Vegas founding member, Steve Hellier.
Tickets are free for all University of Salford staff and students but the public has to pay £15 a day or £40 for the whole Festival, with no discount for Salford residents, which doesn't seem very fair.
