At noon today hundreds and hundreds of two and four wheeled vehicles set off from the Henry Boddington pub in Pendlebury heading for The Christie, led by Santa in a sleigh filled to the brim with presents for the children.
The annual event, organised by the Vesperados scooter club, saw riders dressed as Santas, reindeer, snowmen and elves, while their scooters, bikes and trikes were decorated with tinsel, snow and Christmas trees. There was even a parade of stunning classic cars, ranging from an American Oldsmobile to a British Consul.
It was an incredible sight as people came out of their houses on Bolton Road to watch the start of the Santa Run and cheer the riders on.
"There's scooters, trikes, bikes, classic cars and we've got a magic sleigh" said Santa, also known as Beaver from the Vesperados scooter club "Everyone's happy and I think it's absolutely wonderful for The Christies. The sleigh is full of presents. It's showing our appreciation for sick children, we can handle being at hospital at bad times but these children can't handle that, so with our presents and selection boxes this is our way of looking after them."
"We've got Logan Strick who's doing a music session, we've got little Cai Roberts, who's the face of Dr Martens on their adverts, and Ellis Hollins, Tom Cunnigham from Hollyoaks, who's going to be joining us at The Christie" he added "We got five hundred bikes last year and there's more than that this year. And, for the last few miles of the Run we've got dogs pulling a sleigh to the hospital."
Also joining the Santa Run was the Salford Knights scooter club...
"There's around thirty of us here, a good turnout from Irlam, Eccles and surrounding areas" said Salford Knight, Keith "There's some really nice cars here, and lots of pressies for the kids. That's what it's all about..."
Indeed, a fantastic event, a fantastic sight and a fantastic gesture...
