The well documented campaign against Salford Council's cuts to transport for adults with learning difficulties reaches its final legal conclusion on 9th December at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, when an appeal will be heard to try and overturn the High Court decision of last month (see previous Salford Star articles click here and click here).
No matter what the verdict, on the same night in Little Hulton there's a public meeting, instigated by campaigners against transport cuts, to set up a committee to fight all Salford Council cuts to services for elderly and vulnerable people. And there's lots more coming...
While the adult transport cuts campaign continues from this year's cuts, this will be seen as poisonous chick feed compared to what's coming between 2015-17...
The Council is proposing a cut of up to £120,000 to transport for young people, a cut of up to £175,000 in care and support packages for people with adult social care needs, a farm-out of adult social care to slash £500,000 from the budget, an axing of £495,000 to sheltered housing, and a £1million battering of the Supporting People fund which helps vulnerable adults, families in poverty and the homeless.
The Council's also proposing the hiving off of health and social care services to other organisations to cut £5,448,000 from its budget (for full details see previous Salford Star article click here).
While at this stage these are only proposals from Salford Council, campaigners want to make sure that the funding battle is fought before the cuts are agreed, rather than wait until it's almost too late.
"This meeting is for everyone to get our heads together and form a committee so we can fight our corner for the most vulnerable and our elderly who cannot speak for themselves" say Noreen Bailey and Norma Parkinson Green "We need people for our committee with children who still attend special needs school because as soon as they become of age to leave school the same situation as we have all gone through will just happen again.
"We also need mums and dads who have gone through all this with the transport, to try and prevent our day centres and respite centres from being taken from our sons and daughters" they add "Better to sort things now rather than when it happens. We have a councillor to join us on our committee which has made us feel much better because it lets us all know that not all councillors are like those who won't fight for us. So please help us to get this off the ground so we can fight for the most vulnerable in Salford."
The public meeting is open to everyone from the community, and replaces the previous one scheduled for 20th November which had to be cancelled.
