ANTI-FRACKING CAMPAIGNERS URGE SALFORD MAYOR TWEET STORM

Star date: 12th October 2014

MANCHESTER FRIENDS OF THE EARTH TARGETS IAN STEWART

Back in April a 3,500 name petition against fracking in Salford was handed into the Council, which should have triggered a Cabinet `consideration'. In the event it allowed a five minute presentation with no debate, before campaigners were ushered out of the room.

Six months later and not a word has been heard... "We think this is totally unacceptable" states Manchester friends of the Earth which is now urging a Twitter storm directed at Salford Mayor Ian Stewart.

After the anti-fracking winter of discontent in Barton Moss, a 3,500 name petition was handed into Salford Council in April, which should have triggered a debate at least amongst members of the Cabinet. Instead the anti-fracking petition led to a five minute hearing at Cabinet, delivered by Ali Abbas, on behalf of Manchester Friends of the Earth, after which there was no further discussions (for full background and report see previous Salford Star article – click here)

Now, six months on from then, nothing further has been heard, despite other councils around the country rejecting fracking and local councillors speaking out against controversial shale gas extraction – including Kate Chappell, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for the Environment, Colin Lambert, former leader of Rochdale Council, and Trafford councillor Jane Baugh.

"If other councillors have been willing to talk to their residents and voters about the fracking issue, why are Salford councillors so reluctant to respond to the legitimate questions raised by the people of Salford?" states Manchester Friends of the Earth "We think this is totally unacceptable."

Now the organisation is urging people to tweet-storm Salford Mayor Ian Stewart in the hope that it will kick him to make a response.

There are two ready done tweets available to send...

@MayorofSalford Six months ago, 3,000+ people asked @SalfordCouncil to go ‪#‎frackfree‬. Where's our ‪#‎fracking‬ answer?

@MayorofSalford Six months on and not a tweet – the people of Salford demand a response to our #fracking petition

People can either cut and paste them from here or go to Manchester Friends of the Earth site and click on a link which will do it automatically for people with a Twitter account – click here to go to the site.

For anyone who wants to find out about Fracking I would like to suggest they look at Danielle Spears You Tube called ' The Dash for Gas. Independence at a Price."" It is excellent at illustrating the issues and the concerns of individuals in the Blackpool area. Worth a look. Maybe Mr Stewart could take a look. I know all the BartonMoss campaigners know all this but there are many people who do not understand what the fuss is all about.

tHE MAJORITY OF THE PUBLIC DO NOT WANT DIRTY FRACKING. IN FACT POLLUTED FRACKING WATER WAS ONLY RECENTLY DUMOED IN A CALIFORNIAN PUBLIC AQUIFIER ONLY THIS LAST WEEK. PLEASE HOLD A PROPER AND DEMOCRATIC DEBATE WITH THE PEOPLE AS YOU ARE ELECTED TO DO.

What do we expect with ian stewart and his 13 Salford Labour mini-mayors 'running' Salford Council? He has put his Barton Moss flat cap away as there are no votes in it for him, so is now showing his TRUE colours; yellow being the main one. Silence is as loud as it gets when it comes to getting an answer from any of them :(

I have wrote to the council on numerous occasions regarding the planning for Barton Moss(Drilling into shale without permission) and I get a response saying...what's been done is done and its in the past. Blatant disregard to what's been happening on the moss

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
