Some films just have to be seen, and High On Hope is one of them. First screened privately at Islington Mill two years ago, it's a quirky and hilarious documentary, using archive footage, graphics and interviews to bring back to life the time in the early 90s when the whole state in the form of politicians, police and the media cracked down on ordinary people for, er, dancing!
Unbelievably, the warehouse/acid house/ rave scene was viewed as one of the biggest threats to civilisation and the film highlights the ridiculous moral outrage at the time when shops were frightened to sell large decks and speakers in fear of being shut down by the authorities, and riot police were deployed to industrial estates in Blackburn and places to break up parties.
"For a large proportion of partygoers it was much more than dancing, it was about trying to change the status quo" says documentary director Piers Sanderson "Young people with no jobs and no future began to take control of their lives, and, despite the vilification from the some quarters of the press, a sense of community and possibility began to form

High On Hope really is one of those films that has to be viewed but its creators are still trying to raise money to pay for the rights to use the music contained within live footage. As such, it's on hold. But High On Hope is having a Talk Turkey fundraising party at the `rave cave' First Chop Brewing Arm on Trinity Way.in Salford on November 1st
DJs on the night include Russ Marland, Johnny Abstract, Il Bosco AKA Crowhead and Mikey D.O.N. All have given their time for free and have pledged to donate items to raffle off on the night. Style of music on the night is reminiscent of the rave era and will include acid house, techno, rave, old skool, hardcore and house.
Wayne Hemingway, founder of Red or Dead, legendary `...On The Sixth Day' clothing company Identity and artist Dave Little have also donated items for the raffle.
