UNISON, GMB and UNITE, the three trade unions that represent over 1.5million public sector workers, this afternoon dramatically called off the national strike set for next Tuesday 14th October, after new proposals were put forward by the Local Government Association (LGA).
A statement from the three unions that the proposals with no details released so far were "the best achievable by negotiation" from the LGA and covered the period from 1st April 2014 to 31st March 2016.
In suspending the strike action, the statement added "all three unions have made it clear that they want to strengthen the collective bargaining machinery covering local government and schools and move quickly to jointly tackle important issues facing their members with the Local Government Association.
"Members covered by the National Joint Council for Local Government have the lowest pay in the public sector and have suffered significant attacks on their conditions of work in recent years" the statement explained "The unions will now move forward together to consult their members."
Meanwhile, the health workers four hour strike set for Monday 13th, between 7am and 11am, is to go ahead, and the civil service strike set for Wednesday 15th October is also set to go ahead.
Ameen Hadi, from Salford City UNISON, told the Salford Star that the union would now be encouraging its members to show solidarity with the health workers by joining them at 7am outside Salford Royal Hospital (Hope).
The march against low pay and austerity, called by the TUC, is also set to go ahead in London on Saturday October 18th.
