Next Saturday, a march is taking place in Liverpool that will see people from the North West joining thousands throughout the world marching to help elephants and rhinos. An elephant is killed for its ivory every 15 minutes, and a rhino for its horn every nine hours. If the slaughter continues at this rate both species could be extinct in less than ten years.
The North West march is taking place in Liverpool, and one of the Salford organisers, Jo from Action for Elephants UK (North West), is urging people to join in.
"The main aim of the march is to raise public awareness of the poaching crisis it's serious and urgent" she says "Elephants and rhinos are being poached to the brink of extinction, and they have no voice of their own. We are their only hope.
"The march on 4 October will be the largest ever global event to bring attention to the poaching crisis facing elephants and rhinos" she adds "These gentle and highly intelligent creatures are being slaughtered in such huge numbers that both species may vanish into oblivion forever. So far over two hundred people have pledged to join the march in the North West but with a week to go we hope there will be many more on the day.
"All of us in Action for Elephants are just ordinary people who can't stand by and watch these magnificent creatures disappear" she explains "We would love supporters from across the region to join us. The march isn't long or difficult and there will be speakers, music, face painting and children's crafts it is a day for everyone."
Action for Elephants is a grass-roots group taking action by protests on the street, social media campaigns, supporting projects in the field, and spreading awareness and information to the wider public. Celebrity supporters include Richard Branson, Stephen Fry, Ricky Gervais, Joanna Lumley, Michaela Strachan, Bill Bailey, and more.
Set up in October 2013, Action for Elephants has held several marches and demonstrations, and spearheaded a range of campaigns including urging Members of Parliament to adopt a bill on the ivory trade - and sending petitions and letters to Chinese leaders, elephant advocates, celebrities who back wildlife conservation, and legislators in other countries voting on measures to protect elephants. It also supports and raises funds for elephant groups and projects on the ground in Tanzania and Sri Lanka.
