"Let us show you what they are planning to take off us"

Last month residents in Hill Top Road, Walkden, uncovered, what they said was an underhand deal done by Salford Council to flog off the public open space Hill Top Moss to developer Redwaters (see previous Salford Star article for full background – click here).

The residents were given just two weeks to object to the sale in principle of the Moss, which is part of Blackleach Country Park, after Salford Council agents had been in discussions for over two years with the developers. The decision is now, apparently, down to one Assistant Mayor, Councillor David Lancaster, whose name appears to crop up every time there are controversial schemes in the city.

"The Moss has been public open space land for as long as anyone can remember, generations have used it" says Shirley Jones from Residents and Friends of Hill Top Moss "It's a vital part of the wildlife corridor according to the Council's own policies. It's the highest point in Salford with views to die for! All of which they've conveniently forgotten about now that a small, out of town developer is throwing money at them.

"We only found out by accident but Salford Council said no decisions have been made when we asked what was going on, so lulled locals into a false of security" she adds "Later they told us they've been in negotiations with a developer for two and half years! Residents got barely two weeks to object. Why only this one developer? David Lancaster and Ian Stewart both ignore our group's letters. David Lancaster is making the decision on his own behind closed doors soon, they won't tell us when. You all know the drill!"

The residents' group has organised a family protest march and walk around Hill Top Moss for tomorrow, Sunday 31st August at noon, and people are urged to bring their kids and dogs...

"The walk is from Hill Top Road onto the Country Park and onto the land they want to rob us of" says Shirley "Walkden doesn't have much green left...Help us to shout out from Salford's highest point to the whole of Salford and beyond, our disgust at what they're doing to our city, not just here but everywhere."

More open spare lost when will the councils realise that once land is built on it lost for ever I came across this underhandedness when a bowling green next to a reserve was targeted for 4 low cost houses local wild life trust complained for the build to stop local joined in and this plan was lost. Guess what happen within a couple of weeks with out protest from the wildlife trust the land was sold and one very very large house about 10 bedrooms was built what cash passed bt for this to happen fight on but look for the hidden deal

I wholeheartedly second the comment made by Rick and Angie. Credit to Salford Star and Hilltop locals and beyond for raising awareness of this. As a Walkden/Salford resident I too will support this cause which once again highlights the selfish, greedy and corrupt Salford Council.

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
