In the last twelve months, 789,000 families in the UK have been affected by Benefit Sanctions for things like not attending information sessions that are identical to ones that people have already been to, not applying for jobs that people have no chance of getting or being able to do, missing appointments by a few minutes and more.
Now, Salford Unite Community Branch is urging as many people as possible to appeal decisions, which it believes are politically motivated by the ConDem Government. Unite is drawing attention to a statement made by the job centre staff's trade union, Public and Commercial Services union (PCS), which states that the Government is putting intolerable pressure on staff...
"The Government's stricter rules have led to target-like objectives being set for staff to sanction a certain number of claimants, regardless of their behaviour" PCS explains "This has often come with the threat of disciplinary action and is unfair on both staff and the people entitled to benefits who they are there to help."
The Salford Unite Community Branch is urging people to appeal decisions within one month of hearing, and is holding its first meeting on Friday 5th September at 2pm with the title How To Challenge Benefit Sanctions.
It's being held at the Salford Unemployed and Community Resource Centre (UCRC), 84-86 Liverpool Road in Eccles M30 0WZ.
In the meantime anyone who needs any support or advice can contact the Centre on 0161 789 2999.
