Who's the true boss of the Moss? Not Peel Holdings or IGas! The boss of Chat Moss is, apparently, the Peregrine – a vicious, speedy bird of prey that hunts lesser winged creatures in the spectacular rural area near Irlam.
Next Saturday, 30th August, between 10am and 2pm, there's Salford's Got Talons – a Manchester Ship Canal World Heritage Group event – to spot the Peregrine and possibly more than six other species of raptors, including the Marsh Harrier, Hobby, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Osprey and Hen Harrier.
"Chat Moss, just north of Irlam, is a perfect place to watch birds of prey with panoramic, sweeping views of peat pools and the tree-line from a watchpoint at a site on The Moss, and real life falcon displays" state the organisers "Learn how to identify some of the amazing birds of prey that inhabit Salford".
The Birds of Prey Workshop event is free – just meet at Moss Farm, Cutnook Lane, Irlam before setting off for Chat Moss Raptor Watchpoint.
On Sunday, 31st August, the Peregrine might pop up again a bit nearer to urban-land, when the Costa Del Salford Nature Safari sets off in search of more winged wildlife around Salford Quays.
"We'll see The Big Five - Kingfisher, Lapwing, Mute Swan, Grey Heron and Cormorant - and learn about the birds that make the Costa del Salford their home, and the proud heritage of this area that was a working docks during the 20th Century" state the organisers "We hope to see around thirty species, including The Big Five, with sightings of Peregrine, Skylark, Kestrel, Sand Martin, Song Thrush, Goldfinch and Greenfinch also possible, and if we are very lucky we might even see a Little Egret or Mediterranean Gull for that continental vibe."
"The site is becoming popular with nature lovers" they add "Now there are regular birdwatching cruises around the docklands and more and more people taking the time to take a closer look at the wildlife of this area."
The Costa Del Salford Nature Safari is another free Manchester Ship Canal World Heritage Group event, meeting at Pomona Metrolink Station at 10am.
