With Salford bracing itself for the next planning application from energy company IGas to potentially frack on Barton Moss, groups opposed to the move are gearing up for more action. This autumn sees a flurry of meetings, information exchanges and a march, beginning this Thursday 28th August at 7pm when Irlam and Cadishead Frack Free hold a discussion at the Nag's Head on future activities.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday 3rd September at the Irlam Steel Recreation Club there's a public meeting by Barton Moss Community Energy where alternatives to fracking will be explored, including community owned renewable energy in Barton Moss.
Organisations from the North West and beyond will discuss the potential for setting up a community owned energy co-operative in the Barton Moss area to answer the energy crisis.
"Salford has the potential for developing a variety of different renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, hydroelectricity and geothermal energy" the organisers state "In other parts of the UK and in other countries like Germany community energy co-operatives have sprung up to develop these resources."
"This August, wind power in the UK produced a record 22% of the UK's energy, beating the previous record" they explain "When other sources of renewable energy are included, more power was generated from renewable sources than by coal, gas or nuclear power. This May Germany set a new record by producing 74% of its energy from renewable energy sources, breaking previous records. The majority of this energy is owned by individuals and community energy groups, not big companies, as is normal in the UK."
At the public meeting, Millie Darling from the Repowering London project will be speaking about its project in Hackney which is providing work experience opportunities for local people, energy advice workshops to help reduce bills and installing community-owned solar panels on council estate roofs.
The Barton Moss Community Energy public meeting will be repeated on Monday 29th September, 7pm-9pm, at Eccles Gateway.
Before that, on Sunday 7th September 2pm-4pm, there's a Barton Moss Reunion SolidariTEA Party at Barton Moss, and on Sunday 21st September there's a People's Climate March in Manchester as part of a national day of action and four days later, Thursday 25th September there's the launch of Frack Free Salford (details nearer the time).
