Behind the Sports Village on Littleton Road there's already a recently completed flood scheme; now the Environment Agency and Salford City Council are planning another on the opposite side of the road at Castle Irwell.
£4.1million has been secured from the Government to create a flood defence area in the loop of the Irwell which will involve excavating the ground at Castle Irwell to create a flood storage area, starting in spring 2015.
A video has been put on YouTube giving details of the scheme, urging people to `Have Your Say' next Thursday 3rd July 3:30pm-7:30pm at Salford Sports Village.
On the video, Andy Cameron, senior adviser at the Environment Agency, tells viewers a few details of the project…
"The water will get in over a side spill weir similar to the one at Littleton Road" he says "Within the basin we'll reinstate the sports pitches that the University has there at the moment and we're creating a wildlife area for the community to enjoy at the northern end. We're also intending to improve access for local people as part of the project."
"Salford has a long history of flood risk, it's flooded 14 times in the last century" he adds "The new flood defences will also help safeguard the economy – they'll protect areas that have been allocated for new development and, hopefully, will help to attract investment in other areas that are currently at risk of flooding."
The planning application for the scheme will be submitted in September to Salford Council.
