Star date: 21st June 2014

GRAHAM COOPER AND CURTIS WHITE TO CYCLE THE LENGTH OF BRITAIN FOR NEW SALFORD CHARITY

This Friday, 27th June, well known local activist and youth worker, Graham Cooper, together with youth worker, Curtis White, will set off on nwhat they admit is a mad cycle ride from John O'Groats to Land's End, to raise money for new charity, Salford4Good.

"It's either going to make us extreme athletes or kill us" says Curtis.

"Please don't compare us to the Tour de France riders and their graceful, fluid movements through the Alps: more like a poor parent pushing a pram up Rainsough Brew…" Graham

They admit they're bonkers. They admit they're not pro cyclists. But Graham Cooper and Curtis White have taken up the challenge to cycle from John O'Groats to Lands End to raise money for new charity, Salford4Good.

The pair, with back up from Amanada Bickerton, will set off from John O'Groats this Friday, 27th June, and hope to finish at Land's End on 12th July, via a community reception in Salford on 4th July at 12 noon at The Broughton Trust, Humphrey Booth Centre, Heath Avenue, M7 1NY.

"Look, let's be honest, I am not a pro cyclist" says Graham, whose last challenges were doing a lock-on at Barton Moss to protest against fracking and standing in the local election in Salford last month.

"I use my bike to commute - but only when it's sunny - and that's a round trip of 12 miles" he explains "I've completed rides such as Manchester to Blackpool in aid of Christie's hospital with our youth clubs over the past five years, though. That planted the seed for such an ambitious challenge for a ten-a-day smoker, who likes a pint and visits the gym from January to April each year.

"We will inevitably be climbing some monster hills at slower than walking pace and cursing ourselves for taking on this challenge" he adds "Please don't compare us to the Tour de France riders and their graceful, fluid movements through the Alps: more like a poor parent pushing a pram up Rainsough Brew. We are fundraising for a new charity that is well worth such effort and one that I believe unlocks so much positivity in Salford and helps many."

Salford4Good was founded last year as a kind of bridge between local good causes who need support, and people who want to support their community through the giving of time and skills, money and resources.

"It's an all-encompassing organisation that is working collectively for Salford's third sector and voluntary groups" says Graham explaining why he's chosen this charity to benefit from his biking torture "It is a way of leading by example and making our own efforts to fundraise and publicize the good work of these groups in Salford.

"It is a part of my own personal list of goals I want to achieve, but also one that is a physical challenge and can in its own way raise the profile of a local deserving charity" he adds "I mean something that is not easy but also do-able with training, hours upon hours of commitment, sweat, pain, determination, support, and willingness for us to take on the unknown! Fortunately I work for an organisation that helps make people like me realise their dreams."

And Curtis adds: "Personally I think it's probably the worst but best idea we've had…it's either going to make us extreme athletes or kill us…"

Please encourage the guys (and their long-suffering support crew and dogsbody) - you can follow progress on the blog and social media. That is if we can get internet and phone signal in the far-flung highlands... You can sponsor them or make a donation to Salford4Good through the blog and FB site. Wish us luck xxx

What a fantastic gesture, I wish the lads well in their challenge. What a selfless gesture....and for a worthy cause. So much nicer to hear a story of local heroes instead of the self congratulatory promotion we normally here spouted by the Councillors!

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
