OWEN JONES GIVES SALFORD AND MANCHESTER A MESSAGE OF HOPE NOT UKIP

MARKET STREET HOPE MESSAGE FROM JONES AND CAMPAIGNERS
Last night, on Market Street in Manchester city centre, hundreds of people gathered to hear journalist and tv commentator, Owen Jones, deliver an anti-UKIP, anti austerity, message of hope in advance of the People's Assembly demo and festival in London on June 21st.
Joined by an array of campaigners, from Save Lower Broughton Children's Centre to UK Uncut to Salford Against Bedroom Tax, Jones said "We're going to come out with a message of defiance, that we're sick of being made to pay for a crisis we actually had nothing to do with…"

"If you are going to start from scratch and build a society, would you build a society where, in the last five years alone, the wealth of the top 1,000 richest people has doubled, while one million people are dependent on food banks? Would you design a society where most people in poverty are in work?..."
From 5:30pm yesterday, and for a full hour, hundreds of Manchester city centre shoppers and commuters heard things they rarely hear on mainstream tv or radio or in newspapers – unless Owen Jones is about. For one hour, outside Boots on Market Street, the subject of abuse wasn't immigrants or benefit cheats – it was big companies, the rich and UKIP.
Owen Jones - tv commentator, author and journalist - was about, joined by an array of campaigners whose message also gets lost in the mainstream media…people from trade unions, people trying to save children's centres, people trying to stop the Bedroom Tax, tax dodging corporations, fracking and TTIP (the next BIG campaign).
Organised by Manchester People's Assembly to raise awareness that's it's not all UKIP, and to publicise a massive protest and festival in London on June 21st, hundreds of people gathered as Jones, originally from Stockport, spoke of his pride when he heard the election results from Manchester…
"There was a clear result that Manchester told Nigel Farage to `F' off and had rejected the politics of what UKIP stood for" he said "UKIP let people at the top off the hook because what they don't do is ask who is responsible for the mess this country's in…
"…Is it the Polish fruit picker? Is it the Indian nurse? Is it the Nigerian cleaner?" he asked "Or is it the bankers who plunged this country into economic disaster? Is it the private landlords charging rip off rents? Is it tax dodgers who dodge £25 billion off the exchequer every year? Is it the poverty paying bosses who have left most people in poverty in work? Is it those people at the top, the people with wealth and power, or is it our neighbours down the streets? That's what we're about – we're about telling people who to be angry with – not to be angry with each other.
"This is about offering people hope, because at the moment out there there's so much fear, so much anger but there's one thing missing and that's hope" he explained "Ask people this… `If you are going to start from scratch and build a society, would you build a society where in the last five years alone the wealth of the top 1000 richest people has doubled, while one million people are dependent on food banks? Would you design a society where most people in poverty are in work?...
"`Would you design a society where people have to choose between heating their homes and feeding their kids? Would you design a society where one million families have to depend on legal loan sharks like Wonga?' Of course you wouldn't and that is what this is about. It's about saying `We don't accept a society that's all about making sure that people at the top, the richest people are ok, whilst millions of people struggle."
Jones added that it was important to give people solutions…
"Instead of spending millions of pounds on in-work benefits, everyone in work should have a living wage" he said "Instead of leaving millions of people on social housing waiting lists and kids in overcrowded homes, let councils build houses…Instead of people having unskilled jobs we should create hundreds and thousands of renewable energy jobs like they did in places like Germany. That instead of the banks we bailed out carrying on business as usual, paying out bonuses and not lending, they should be under the control of the people of this country.
"…That instead of being held to ransom by rail companies and energy companies who charge rip off bills that people can't afford, energy and rail should be run under public ownership…That instead of going on about benefit fraud all the time…we should be talking about tax avoidance by rich people worth £25billion because Amazon and Google and people at the top refuse to pay their taxes…
"What the media and politicians do is stand up to the poor, they stand up to people with no wealth and they stand up to people with no power" he explained "But we've got to stand up to people who have the wealth and have the power, those are the people who are responsible for the mess this country is in. We've got to have hope because out there is an appetite for what we are talking about."
Referencing previous battles for democracy, the women's vote, the NHS and Welfare State, as well as the more recent fight against the Bedroom Tax and the UK Uncut campaigns against tax dodging corporations, Jones urged people to unite…
"Lets have hope, let's have courage, let's take to the streets, make our voice heard, and let's remind people that it's those at the top who are responsible for the mess this country is in, and stop letting them turn all of us against each other" he concluded to huge cheers "We must never let them divide us…Never! Never! Never!"
Before Owen Jones had taken to the stage, speakers had lined up to tell of their own campaigns against `those at the top', urging passers by to listen to some facts that turn austerity on its head…
Michelle from UK Uncut talked about tax dodgers and the billions of pounds avoided every year by… "Gary Barlow, Top Shop, Boots…they're all at it" she said, picking out the Boots store with her finger… "£1.8billion in avoided tax"… Then Vodafone…"hasn't paid a penny in corporation tax since 2011… the taxes Vodafone owes could pay for thousands of new affordable homes – which is why UK Uncut is taking over Vodafone shops on Saturday 14th June and transforming them into shelters, homes, hostels…"
Alex Davidson, Secretary of the Manchester Trades Union Council, underlined the point, talking of low pay, zero hours contracts and workfare used by "ruthless employers, many who are represented on this high street…employers like JD Sports and Sports Direct who have huge numbers of their workers on zero hours contracts…Only unionisation can help protect these workers" he explained.
Next up were campaigners from Salford. Maria Brabiner, from the Anti Bedroom Tax Federation, told how she treated the Bedroom Tax as a war situation…
"My mum and her generation survived World War 2 by rationing food and heating…that's what people have to do now" she explained "This Government has declared war on its own people…the whole of the working class are the enemy. It's ideology and it's disgusting."
Keri Muldoon and her son Maverick spoke on behalf of the Save Lower Broughton Children's Centre, urging people on Market Street to sign the petition to get 3,000 signatures before the end of June… "I don't know where they expect people to go when they close these services down" Keri said.
From Salford, it was to worldwide issues that affect every doorstep, with Leoni, from the Manchester Stop TTIP Group and Ethical Consumer magazine, explaining the horror that lies in wait from a trade agreement most will never have heard of before.
"TTIP stands for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership and it's the biggest bi-lateral trade deal of all time, between European and States" she said "Companies will be able to sue governments to take action that will affect future profits. That might sound crazy but it's already going on in the world where these agreements exist…
"Germany is getting sued for phasing out nuclear power in the wake of Fukushima disaster, Canada is getting sued for Quebec's ban on fracking, and Australia is getting sued for introducing plain cigarette packaging by a subsidiary of Phillip Morris" she added "This is really scary stuff, states and people won't be able to decide what happens on their sovereign territory, corporations will decide and sue states if they don't comply…"
From corporations taking over the world to corporations taking over under the world, Carmen from the anti-fracking fraternity told how there could be three thousand wells between Manchester and Liverpool if the controversial shale gas industry gets its way. She said the Barton Moss protests will be back later in the year but that the front line had now moved to Crawberry Hill in Hull and urged people to attend the upcoming solidarity Sunday.
The message from Owen Jones of taking to the streets and fighting back was echoed by Maurice from the PCS trade union and Lawrence from Manchester University Student Union, who told of huge strikes planned for July 10th by public sector workers… "We've called for a general strike by PCS, Unite, UNISON, GMB, FBU and the teachers" said Maurice "To show this Government that the public sector is not for sale and will not go to the highest bidder..."
The message from Market Street was that while UKIP give one very, very narrow bigoted focus for people's frustrations, there's loads of other, more real, common sense explanations and reasons to be angry. There are also community fightbacks going off all over the place – from Lower Broughton to the TTIP international stage.
The People's Assembly, which organised last night's street protest, aims to build a mass movement uniting all these campaigns from all over the country to give people hope, not fear.
The People's Assembly has called a Demand The Alternative national demonstration and festival on Saturday 21st June in London, at which Russell Brand will be speaking, as well as Owen Jones and many others. Tellingly, the demonstration will set off from the BBC HQ in Portland Place before marching to Parliament.

| You merely confirm what I have been saying all along, we need a government that will work for the people and not for the benefit of big companies. As for the number of people out of work it's like blaming the passengers of the Titanic for drowning. Successive governments have ignored the evil that is unemployment and now blame those out of work for being in a situation they have no control over. And don't give me the old pony about there being "lots of jobs out there". I know skilled men and women and graduates who can't find work. The problem is a system that never has and never will work in the interest of all. Laisez faire, free for all capitalism works in the interest of a very small minority. I do wish you would try to wriggle out of the question of whether or not you believe in free at the point of delivery health care and education. |

| Taxes to fund benefits I have no problem with, but taxes to fund people's life styles, no. Paying for the elderly, sick. people who have fallen on hard times due to job loss, yes. I can take you round my area and show you people and whole families who's life styles are paid for by tax payers, and have no intension of working, a number of people and families who are anti social scum, people who suck the life out of communities whilst decent tax paying people pay for their life styles. On big corporations paying low wages and topping it up with family tax credit, and zero hours, I'm totally against, and if I had my way, I would make these practices illegal. Big corporations avoiding paying tax, mainly foreign companies, this is as much to do with the Labour Party as it is to do with the Tories, both have allowed this to happen, MPs and councillors of all parties have always put their own financial future above the people they claim to represent, the voter. And whilst we blindly keep voting the parasitic scum back in to power nothing will change this. High taxation is a proven system of destroying jobs, as said before, look at France you can also look at Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, economies that can't export their way out of recession because of the euro, which they can't devalue, making exporting cheaper. Health care and education aren't free there paid for through taxes |

| Funny how those same people who piss and moan about paying taxes to fund benefits are the same people who think that low wages which need to be made up by state benefits are ok. So you don't think people who create the wealth deserve a greater share of the fruits of their labours. Now how about free, at the point of delivery, health care and education? How about huge multinational companies using slave labour and zero hours contracts? |

Should't you be paying them a whole lot more, shouldn't they have a equal share in your business with an equal share of the profits your business makes, after all, this is the concept of socialism, what's yours is mine, and what's mine is my own. What are you going to do tod if your employee's come to you one day and say hey tod, were the wealth creators (your words) who keep your business going and as the ones doing all the hard work we should have equal share of this business. After all, this is socialism. Are you going to give them an answer as a capitalist or a socialist, or is it socialism only when it suits. I know many wealth creators that do exacly as you have said, however unfortunately when they make it big and only a small portion do (The others lose their homes, families, health, and pride as you say) they get dogmatised as greedy evil worker hating bastards. Strange thing is that most of the people I know that have made it are proper Salford born and bred and true grafters, maybe that's the reason for their success? Many did pay lower wages as start-ups but under the Liebour government at the time it was that or don't employ, most I know are now paying a decent wage not thanks to the last lot but due to reduced costs and burdens under the current lot. |

I run my own business , albeit in a small way .
So I really don't need advice from the likes of you .
My four employees are treated well , earn good pay , and have regular hours. They also get an annual bonus .
In return , I get from them hard work and loyalty.
It works well for us !
That's the problem with you tories , all greed and self-interest.

| this is just my thoughts because I am sick of all this hate and people not standing together we all seem to argue about the same thing but never seem to come together and discuss why we feel like this,i watch prime ministers question time and I cant believe that grown men and women can act like little kids that can not get their own way how are we supposed to believe any of them when they cant even respect each other and if we don't at least try and get one big meeting between us to let our feelings be heard what hope have we got I am just a mum with 3 special sons who really deserve better and if I don't fight for them what hope have they got this poem I wrote because I felt so angry towards both government and our council specially the mayor hope he sees this
This world

The wealth creators are the people who come up with the idea's the people who start businesses by risking there homes, savings, time spent with there loved one's they miss out on, people who if they didn't take a chance in risking there personal savings and family life, would't be able to employ people. Tom you have the same right as these people to start a business and to take the same risks as they do, so tom why don't you do it, then you can pay your employees huge wages whilst trying to compete in a competitive market place. Let us know when you've achieved this. Amazing how many armchair socialists we have on here who have never ran a business, if you don't like being a employee become an employer, what have you got to lose, family, home, savings, mental health,pride. If you take the risks, should't you gain the most. |

Minimum wage levels and zero -hour contracts have become the norm for many , especially under the corrupt misrule of the tory filth .
Liebour are no better .
Of course those who create the wealth should enjoy the fruits of their labour.
Society should not be like it currently is .
Drastic and dramatic change must be forced , as it will never be given .

| The problem with taxation is that it will be taken either directly or indirectly. The problem with indirect taxation is that the poor pay a far greater share. The tax burden has shifted since 1979 from direct to indirect taxation. I'll leave the reader to draw their own conclusions from that. As usual the proponents of the politics of greed try to claim that high direct taxation is the only aim of socialism. This is not true. For example the privatisation of electricity and gas has been an unmitigated disaster and not just for those of us paying through the nose for light and heat. In 2012-13 31000 people died in this country because they could not keep warm. I'll ask you both again though if you believe in free health and education? Do you believe that those who create the wealth should have a greater share in the fruits of their labour? I'll even ask if you think it right that 31000 people were allowed to die in the name of profit for multinational companies? |

No everyone would be paying for it, the point I am trying to get through to you is that if you kick us all in the balls then next time we might just not show up to pay your bill. Oh and as for your other point then if you know of some way to live without eating then please do tell us all and the UN for that matter, millions of lives could be saved around the world. Fact is Bernard we all need to eat, I do hope my very simple explination will demonstrate the simple economic workings of this planet to you. The last comment that David cameron wrote on this page is very true the richer people of France are coming over here in droves to avoid paying massive taxes across the channel, if we follow the lead of the French and others in Europe and hike our taxes back up to what Labour wanted these people will leave our shores leaving those that rely on the "free" NHS and education system in real dire straits, because Bernard we just will not have the money. We need the rich more than they need us, and we need rich immigrants not cheats and scroungers.

You can't get through to them, there's no such thing as free health care or education. | Bernard, we don't have free healthcare or education in this country it all paid for by taxation. This is how taxation works. Suppose that every day, ten men go out for dinner. The bill for all ten comes to £100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men — the poorest — would pay nothing; the fifth would pay £1, the sixth would pay £3, the seventh £7, the eighth £12, the ninth £18, and the tenth man — the richest — would pay £59. That's what they decided to do. The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement — until one day, the owner threw them a curve (in tax language a tax cut). "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by £20." So now dinner for the ten only cost £80.00. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six — the paying customers? "I only got a pound out of the £20," declared the sixth man who pointed to the tenth. "But he got £7!" "Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man, "I only saved a pound, too . . . It's unfair that he got seven times more than me!". "That's true!" shouted the seventh man, "why should he get £7 back when I got only £2? The wealthy get all the breaks!" "Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!" The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night he didn't show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered, a little late what was very important. They were £52 short of paying the bill! Imagine that! And that, Bernard, is how the tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up at the table anymore. Where would that leave the rest? |

SALFORD TEACHERS STRIKE HUGE SUCCESS
Salford teachers, on strike to make a stand against ConDem Government cuts, claimed huge success today as over fifty schools were closed and all schools affected in some way.
Salford NUT and NASUWT members joined thousands of teachers from all over the North West in a massive rally and march through Manchester city centre, with Education Minister Michael Gove taking most of the flak. Over fifty Salford schools were closed today, with many more affected, as teachers went on strike against ConDem Government attacks on education. The teachers held picket lines at their own schools and then joined thousands of their colleagues from all over the North West in a huge march through Manchester city centre, followed by a mass rally at Piccadilly Gardens.
"This is making a stand for education" said Kath Wight, NUT rep at St Ambrose Barlow who was one of more than twenty teachers from the school who went on the march.
"For many, many years education has been getting punched, punched, kicked and punched and the turnout today demonstrates that one of the best schools in Salford has had enough and we've got to show the Government" she added "For NUT members this is the third strike, we've got a general strike planned in November, and we're not going to stop."
Salford NUT Secretary, Lesley Auger, was equally delighted with the Salford teachers' spirit…
"It's a massive turnout, and all of the Salford schools are affected in some way" she said "We are here because we're trying defend our pay, conditions of service and pensions against the inroads that this ConDem Government are making on them."
Joe Langley, branch secretary of NASUWT said that the teachers' action was crucial, not only for defending their pay and conditions, but also for defending the whole state education system.
"We are trying to make a stand about what the Government is trying to do to education, which is basically wreck it" he said "In two years time the education system will be ruined in my view. There's a massive privatisation agenda behind what Michael Gove is doing - it's going to be almost impossible to deliver learning and teaching."/////////

@Bernard Brough, for gods sake just hold your hands up, you clearly stated in your first post that the strike had nothing to do with pay, those of us who read the article properly unlike yourself can clearly see that it is in fact regarding pay and pensions. It worries me that people like you have the right to vote, if you can not read a very small article on a web page correctly then how can you be expected to understand what political parties stand for. isn't Gove just trying to make qualifications worth something, opposite to what labour did which was to dumb down education and make them worthless, I think the teachers are just peeved that now they are going to have to earn their money instead of what they have done for the last 30 odd years which was fail the people that they was suppose to educate. how many are going to be found out that their not even up to the job of teaching, and this is why a few are against change. labour don't like it because they can see the loss of next generation of labour supporters, better educated equals less likely to vote labour.///Bernard Brough wrote

OK I made a mistake and it takes a big man to say sorry. I am not a big man. Why are people so against public servants defending their working conditions? On a day when the nasty party have finally admitted that they want private companies to run our schools, on a day when news breaks that MPs will be recommended a 10 per cent pay rise there are people who are prepared to do down valuable public servants like teachers. I have given up hope for the future of this country. You deserve everything that is coming to you. Your apathy in refusing to enforce change, your rolling over as the corporate boot is put into you. If only the ordinary men and women of this country could stand shoulder to shoulder and fight what is so obviously an ideological war being waged on them by all the mainstream parties change for the better might come. There will be those who say that we cant fight it, that it is wrong to strike or disobey the law. It was ordinary people breaking laws and going to prison that gave us so many of the rights we take for granted today. Those people must be turning in their graves at the way we have so easily given up what they fought so hard to get. Shame on us all. AND WHO CAN'T READ

| Its highly unlikely that the PM would be conversing on this bulletin board, but his namesakes recent tirades lead me to this question...if the tories / lib dems are so darn popular why wasn't there a blue-rinsed landslide against the labour council? As for the spending things - you need look no further than that lovely piece of legislation that lets private profiteers (Such as Peel Holdings) get their paws on public (Council Tax) cash for private schemes...looking back at that list Dave's provided - Peel has its fingers in many of those pies mentioned (and yet, despite all the cash it's handed by council - we Still haven't seen ANY Return on Investment).... even the jobs angle has yet to show some results.... |

| We live in a very open country now whether we like it or not, we must now fight for our rights,shout to b heard, go about it the right way wink wink, it's not anymore what you know it is now who you know. Lower broughton is having so many new houses built up around yes Manchester town centre, the government may try to cut under funded low class areas our lower broughton surestart centre for one while they have there second homes!!! | This country has become so divided and brow beaten by the last consecutive governments (Yes New Labour too) that anyone who dares to fight back and protest are labelled jobless hippies and that's by the very people who will become affected by all these changes. It's been a long time coming but reversing small changes as they happen has got to be much easier than trying to turn round whole government policies later.
