BANNED SALFORD ANTI CUTS RALLY DRAWS HUNDREDS

Star date: 18th May 2014

`LOW' AND `DISGUSTING' COUNCIL SLATED AS BEZ SAYS REVOLUTION STARTED IN SALFORD

Over three hundred people enjoyed the Rally On The Lawn yesterday, despite what anti-cuts campaigners called the `low' and `disgusting' Salford Council which used every dirty trick in the book to try and stop people from attending.

The Rally drew those directly affected by Council cuts including disabled people, children, people who work with the vulnerable and lots of families. 12 year old Keelan McNally wowed everyone with his stunning self penned acapella song Which Side Are You On?, while Bez told the crowd to remember that `the revolution started in Salford!'

Neither the Salford Council's dirty tricks department, nor the media's anti-rally spin could stop around three hundred people attending the banned anti-cuts Rally On The Lawn yesterday.

Arrests and fines were threatened, as the Council and Mayor Ian Stewart went into overdrive trying to frighten organisers into cancelling the event and frighten people off from going to the lawn of Salford Civic Centre. But the sun shone, the home made cake stalls went up, the sound system arrived, the crowds came and, with legal observers and a solicitor standing by, not a single policeman or Council official tried to stop it.

This was the true `spirit of Salford', defying authority to try and defend the most vulnerable people in the city who are subject to horrific cuts in their services. Almost everyone present had a story to tell…

"We're here today to support drivers and escorts because they are trying to cut the transport, so these individuals can't get out at all to their day centres unless they pay ridiculous money" said Diane who had brought disabled people in her care to enjoy the day "What do I think of the Mayor and Council? They're absolutely terrible and disgusting."

From the stage, transport worker Colin told carers and parents, "No-one should be going through the stress of this fight, you have enough to do in your personal lives - but once again the Government and the Council are targeting the poor, the elderly and vulnerable people of Salford.

He explained that Salford Council was trying to remove as much transport as possible and remove passenger's assistants who help people in their journey to day care centres, "an essential part of social services"…

Salford Council has a consultation on its proposals which runs until May 26th (after the local election – see previous Salford Star article click here) but Colin said that before this is even finished the Council is "actively removing passengers from transport…by the time the consultation is finished there will be no service left to fight for. We think this is wrong and the Council should hold off their programme until the consultation is finished and the Salford people have spoken.

"What's the point of a consultation if they are not going to listen to what you say?" he asked "We've already got 2,000 signatures for our transport petition and, combined with the consultation that could reach 3,000. At what point will the Council listen and retract its decision, like Notts County Council did when it listened to its people?"

It's voices like this that Salford Council didn't want aired on its (publicly owned) lawn. Representatives from campaigns ranging from Save The Jam Butty Camp* to those opposing mental health services cuts, NHS cuts, welfare cuts and Childrens' Centre cuts attended or spoke - including campaigners trying to save the Lower Broughton Children's Centre who said the centre, due for closure, had over 2,000 people registered and how, last week alone, 242 low income families had used it.

"My name's Maverick and I've been going to Sure Start since I was a little kid and now my sister Phoenix goes there" said a young boy "I'll be heart broken if they shut it down."

The speeches were interspersed with trad rad music from Michael Burns, a popular acoustic set from Hanky Park's James `Shinny' Davenport, and some stunning acapella self penned songs from 12 year old Keelan McNally, including `Which Side Are You On?' which said it all and drew cheers from the crowd.

Keelan's mum, Mags, said she was at the Rally because she was worried for her son's future…

"It's about everything across the board and I'm just really concerned about how our community is going" she said "I'm against fracking, the mental health cuts, everything. Noreen, the lady who has organised this, has sons who rely on the transport to get out of the house, it's just shocking.

Mags had been publicising the event on social network sites and was shocked at the Council's response…

"I cannot believe the phone calls that Noreen's had and I've had from the Council saying that this can't go ahead" she told the Salford Star "I said `It can, it's our human right for free speech and assembly; it's a public space and when we leave it will be perfect' - but they've done everything to threaten us. They told us we would be arrested if we turned up today. They told us we're committing an offence, yet there's no offence to be committed.

"One of the ladies getting married at the registry office here today contacted me on Facebook and said `Please I'm getting married I don't want my wedding ruined' and I reassured her that it wouldn't be disrupted at all, that what we're trying to do is be positive and open people's eyes" she added "I'm disgusted that they then used wedding parties as a way to try and stop this. I found that really low and disgusting.

"That was their last shot of trying to stop this event – but nothing was going to stop this event. The BBC were also supposed to have done an interview with Noreen about the Rally but they never phoned. I'm not sure why, or whether they'd been told not to…

"This has been a beautiful peaceful day, raising money for a good purpose" she added "Yet the Mayor did everything in his power to stop it because he doesn't want us to bring his wrong doings to the people who have attended today."

Noreen herself said from the stage "I've never been so disgusted in all my life but I'm so proud of all the Salford people who have come here today…"

Meanwhile, to huge applause, Bez urged people to take control of their lives, as services that people's fathers and their fathers built and paid for, are now being snatched away…

"If we all stood together and stayed strong we can all make change - this is the time, now!" he said "This could be one of our last chances, because we're going to get fracked, they're taking your legal aid off you, the NHS off you, what else?

"We don't have to put up with it" he explained "If we all started living as a proper community, not for money but for love and the people, we can do it together, look after ourselves. The banking system is destroying us all. And these divide and rule policies – Christian brothers against Muslim brothers – what's that bollocks about? It's about money, it's about fucking the people.

"No-one is bad and nasty unless you're money orientated, and then greed and gluttony takes over and you become like a snidey, horrible person who doesn't care for anything except how fat your wallet is" he added "We've got to show these people that we can't be walked over, we can't have our human rights taken off us, and we're going to take care of our institutions ourselves.

"It should be that everyone's a valued member of our society" he concluded "It's power to the people. Spreading the love…The revolution started in Salford, remember that!"

Tammy, from the Barton Moss anti fracking campaign, urging people to support the latest camp in Crawberry Hill, Hull, linked the fight against fracking to the anti-cuts movement…

"The reason that they are going for shale gas is because Cameron and his corporate friends stand to make a quite a bit of money out of it…it's all about profit over people" she explained "There's cuts to public services and jobs, pensions…we're not even feeling the full effects of austerity yet, but I'd like you to ask yourselves `Why do we need this austerity when the banks are gambling on the stock exchange and David Cameron and his cronies are taking money out of our public services to give to the bankers? Why don't we do what Iceland did and stuff the banks?'

"Cuts are unnecessary and inhumane and it's important to fight them" she added "Everything the wealthy have has been got from the backs of the working classes, from our blood, sweat, labour and toil. And it's about time that we told them `You're not having it, we're taking it back'…"

Carmen was another person who attended the rally to oppose fracking and the cuts…

"I'm here to stand up to everything really that's not right at the moment" she said "We've obviously got the cuts which are massive, and the other issue is the fracking and the harm it will cause. But it's a lovely day, and it's all about coming together, that community spirit, and bringing the children out, talking to like minded people and having a good time."

And a good time was had by all. The home made cakes sold out, as did the tombola and the sweets, raising a total of £404.05p for the Macmillan cancer charity and Salford City Boys Football Club.

The successful Rally ended with a message from one of the organisers, Paul Gerrard, Chair of Salford Against The Cuts

"The Council was prepared to diss and manipulate the media and try to frighten people off from coming" he said "There have been no complaints about the weddings today, in fact we left them some bottles of wine as a token of our goodwill…

"But the message from today is that we stand in defence of working class communities and working class people" he said "Salford Labour have lost their way and they need to learn that pretty fast to fight these cuts instead of implementing them…"

No Bernard, i am talking about today's France , not the France of the 16 century your talking about. The France that is now so bad, that the NF is reportedly going to push the now socialist French government in to third place in the euro's. Bernard with that intellect of yours you need to go into your garden and talk to your plants, because you do know what the benefit of shite is to them. And where do you get the lower debt from, don't you remember the IMF reduced Frances credit rating a couple if years ago, meaning they are paying more for borrowing internationally, debt has gone up not down, but then again, you do have problems reading articles or it could be that other socialist infliction, a selective memory. And as for Frances poverty line, try the suburbs around Paris where they have been having riots because of the large immigrant population that is having a detrimental effect on France as it is having on this country, no poverty there then, hey Bernard

Avoid the questions long enough you both might forget about them and be able to get a good nights sleep, dreaming of a perfect socialist world, well at least till the alarm clock goes off. I don't know maybe you are a Roma who has tried to hi-jack the Cuckoo clock trade from indigenous Black forest Germanics? But Kenny lad surly you believe that ONLY Germans resident in the Black forest in Bavaria are allowed to make the Cuckoo clock, I mean after all that's what EU Protected geographical status is all about isn't it??? Hey Kenneth, where's the money that you have in your bank account, pension, mortgage invested, that's right, all the things you socialists so hate, it's invested in things such as oil and gas exploration (fracking) especially your pension, this money also goes on exploiting third world countries that use sweat shops ie India, China, South American countries. Do you really believe that the money you've paid into your pension pays for your pension, no it invested in to what's known as a pension fund, that's invested around the world and makes interest that gets put into your pension to build it up. But then again I think you socialists know what happens with the above, but it's easier to stick your head in the sand when it comes to your standard of living. I think you socialists need to think before you jump in on these bandwagons you so love, I think you need to stand back and think of how you profit directly or indirectly about some of the things you jump up and down about and realise your just as much as part of the problem as everyone else. See you never mentioned France in your slating of me, you want a socialist government that taxes the rich, stifles investment and inspiration, France voted for and got a socialist government and the French economy now resembles a train crash. Taxes at over 80% people with money to invest left in their droves, but we in Briton don't need to looks at France to see socialist governments don't work, we only have to look at this country and see that every time we elect a labour government the British economy crashes, just look at salford council having to go cap in hand to Cameron because our socialist council has frivolously wasted our money. Welcome to hell, a socialist hell. Just got election leaflet from tusc candidates and this lot want my vote I would rather get all of salford tax payers money put it in a pile and burn it than put this bunch in charge of it, which amounts to the same, they'd make the present lot in this council seem competent. Ps ken, tell me ken do you think the quality of the people that are flooding into the country are better than the people who are unemployed because I don't, I believe in quality immigration not mass immigration and not immigrants from third world countries with 13 century religious views that don't fit in with our way of life, you only have to look at Birmingham council and the Trojan horse issue in there schools, immigrants who have come in to change and destroy our culture, rather than to fit into it.

Salford residents need another 250 names on-line,why not publicise the following link. http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/david-cameron-a-fair-deal-for-salford Under Mr Cameron's government, Salford city council is being forced to make £81m of cuts to its services over the next three years - on top of the £97m of cuts already imposed since 2010. At least 1,200 jobs have been lost so far, vital services will disappear and another £94m will have been taken each year from Salford's economy because of the Government's benefit cuts and welfare changes. Please sign this petition to ask the Prime Minister to meet with us to discuss the impact of the cuts, how we can best protect the most vulnerable in our city and how we can continue to bring investment into Salford. To: David Cameron, British Prime Minister I am asking you to meet an all-party delegation from Salford, including City Mayor Ian Stewart and the city's three MPs, to discuss the impact of cuts Salford's services, how to protect the most vulnerable in the city and how to bring investment into Salford. One young man told me his mental health was so bad that he very rarely went out, let alone go to a busy rally but he turned up as he was so scared to loose services, he recieved more than one of those propsed to be cut. I observed lots of families & elderly couples in the most peaceful rally I have ever been to! I am not sure what Ian Stewart expected?? Please Ian Stewart if you are reading this!! Sit down in a room with us, we can fight together!! You Ian Stewart need to be Salfords voice to the goverment making these massive cuts to Salford, you and all the MP,s need to do more to fight Salfords corner! You have lost my vote, am feeling let down that the services you are cutting have massive implications on such vulnerable people when other services seem untouched and yet more money seems to be constantly appearing for rugby clubs & expenses. It all seems very unfair & this is why people are so passionate!!

This is an early evening event but I can imagine organisers will be all over the lawn during the day setting up and sound checking etc. It would be very hypocrital if weddings were taking place after what Ian Stewart has had to say about this weekend. A fine day for Democracy. A term not understood by the despotic mayor and his vampires , as they continually suck the life-blood from this city. Remember their treachery on voting day . OUT OUT OUT .

I know Mayor Greedy reads the Salford Star whilst hiding in his luxury camper van to avoid the justified wrath of the shafted Salford Electorate . So - GET THIS STEWART ! WE'RE HAVING NO MORE OF YOUR TREACHERY . THE FIGHT AGAINST YOUR OBSCENE CUTS IS ON AND YOUR GONE IN 2789 DAYS OR SOONER IF YOU HAVE ANY DIGNITY AND RESIGN .

Congratulations to the people of Salford. Glad you had a good day and got over the moral message. I wish I'd been there. Currently listening to the distressed Greek people contemplating their vote for Europe and whether to vote for a Mayor. They are interested in what is happening in UK and I shared the Salford experiences with them. So many similarities. All fighting the profit seekers. We in Salford are not alone in our anger. Great stuff Paul and Salford against the Cuts.

(Save the jam butty camp). The mayor keep tell us cutbacks got to be made.jam butty camp and kids play centres are main one being hit . If we look back 2 to 3 years ago when we was ask to vote for a mayor of salford. No one told us it would cost over £2m of tax payers money a year to pay for it. This money should be spend on the kids of salford not on a group of over payed failed M.P's . Mr Ian Stewart seem to make a cutback on a service in salford . On use the money to give a job to one of is friends . Would the be willing to let the salford people vote on if the want to keep the mayor or not . Before the end of summer

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO STOP THE STAR

Star date: 16th May 2021

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
