`Georgie, Georgie they call you the Belfast Boy…'
Manchester United and George Best fans are being urged to help a new record hit Number One in time for, what would have been, the legend's 68th birthday on 22nd May. It's a re-release of Don Fardon's Belfast Boy, which originally reached Number 32 in the charts in 1970, wazzed up and re-worked with a new added verse.
The track by local group, The Electric Stars, musically harks back to swinging keyboard driven Sixties pop, merged with Led Zep style guitars and vocals, suffused with old tv commentaries of Best's greatest on field moments and backed by the Manchester United Foundation Youth Choir. It's incredibly catchy, very anthemy and guaranteed to send shivers down the spine of anyone who saw, arguably, the greatest number 7 in history actually play…
"This is not just for United fans...George goes beyond football" enthuses Salford's Jason Edge, The Electric Stars' frontman "He was a 1960's icon...A fashion leader...the first player to open his own boutique and nightclub…the first Irish player to become Euro player of the year...the first player to date Miss World! Before Christiano...before Beckham...before Cantona...before Keegan...before Cryuff...The first pop star footballer!
"It sounds a bit crazy but we are now in the position where we can get it to Number One in the charts for George's birthday" he adds "In the modern day industry you only have to sell around 40,000 copies to get into the top ten and possibly top the charts. If just a percentage of United fans buy the single it would scream into the charts and we can raise a lot of money for charity."
The two charities to benefit are the George Best Foundation and Manchester United Foundation which still works with young people at The Cliff, United's spiritual training ground home.
The Belfast Boy CD comes with a sleeve-note of tributes from a host of names including Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Charlton, Pele, Mike Summerbee and Ryan Giggs. It also has an extra track called Georgie (The Brightest Star), a more laid back worship penned by Jason Edge… `Every day I wish I could still watch you play…a beautiful genius…you went through defences and into my soul…'
