FRACKING’S FIRST POLITICAL PRISONER

Star date: 30th April 2014

BARTON MOSS ACTIVIST JAILED FOR SIX MONTHS WITHOUT TRIAL

"Unbelievable! Anyone would think he'd committed murder to be treated like this!"

Barton Moss protector, Kate McCannn, was remanded in custody for six months by a judge at Manchester Crown Court yesterday until his trial begins on October 9th.

With a growing campaign to free him and Bez due to visit him in jail, Kate, has now been dubbed fracking's first political prisoner.

Full details here…

Kate McCann was one of the most prominent and passionate protectors active at the Barton Moss Community Camp in Salford, participating in lock-ons, slow lorry walks and educating people to the dangers of fracking.

Originally charged, like many others, with `aggravated trespass' on Barton Moss Road which led to the IGas exploratory drilling site, Kate, like many others, was also bailed not to go back to the site by Greater Manchester Police. Most people who had these conditions attached to their arrest charges broke the bail conditions the next morning, in order to get their cases taken to court and get the conditions lifted.

The Salford Star understands that Kate went back to the site on the final week of the Camp to help clear up and was also arrested for breeching bail conditions – but was remanded in custody, firstly for two and a half weeks, and, yesterday, for over five months, making a total of over six months until his trial on October 9th.

The judge's decision provoked outrage and shock, as the original offence apparently wouldn't have carried anything like a six month custodial sentence, even if proved guilty.

A Justice For Kate facebook site has been set up (see here), while supporters have taken to numerous social networking sites to voice their anger…

"Unbelievable! Anyone would think he'd committed murder to be treated like this!"

"Clifford convicted guilty by jury on multiple child grooming offences gets bailed pending sentencing. We have an innocent protector inside for trumped up charges.....With no perceived risk of breaching bail again as there is no fucking activities at the location...feel so angry..."

"Cruel, wicked, wrong…"

The Barton Moss Camp stated "An incredible travesty of justice! This is a political prisoner, incarcerated for protecting your land and your water. Please share this, please carry on making your voices heard. Let them know they cannot get away with this. Let them know we are outraged and disgusted by this deeply unjustified treatment of our peaceful protector. FREE KATE NOW! JUSTICE FOR THE PROTECTORS!"

Simon Pook, of Robert Lizar Solicitors which are handling the case, added: "I'm concerned that this does seem extremely harsh and I'm fully committed to looking at the law and how we can bring about a positive resolution for him."

Bez is due to visit Kate in prison, while supporters are urging people to write their letters of support to Kate…

Ken I did say I intended to make no more comments on this article but I do have to say this, who mentioned "Sweden" ???? I didn't and you didn't so why are you citing Sweden now??? Oh sorry I get it, you have lost the argument and are now dredging the barrel, I could tell you some facts about that great oil and ECO-WOOD exporter Sweden but you would probably not like what I have to say. So Ken please return to your utopian world where the sky is always a dappled shade of green and you relish and roll around in your own bullshit. Goodbye. ............

Alan typical typical Tory retort make your facts to back up your lies Sweden does sell vast amounts of oil surprisingly they people of that country with it being Socialist get a high standard of living out of the revenue of those sales. Unlike the people of the UK we got a dole queue 3.7 people long To say low winds stop green power being reliable have you ever been on moorland or The Coast when there is no wind . The Energy they are getting in Scotland is Wave Energy have you ever seen the sea when it is not either Ebbing or Flowing .Solar Energy comes now from Day light. And when you talk about Costs of it Is the cost of Oil with the eventual destruction of the earth in their ceaseless search for the stuff cheap And when you are insulting the Socialist Party the three highest Standard of living on the globe are socialist countrys So stick with your filthy oil and your party of liars and freeloaders And I will stay with the socialist greens And when it comes to IQ if I could find a lump of bacon as thick as you I would be able to open a transport cafe WIND AND WAVE ARE THE WAY FORWARD ( END OF STORY) ADIOS AMIGO VAYA CON DIOS Standards of living in the World are Socialist Countrys

Ken you really do make me laugh read what I wrote properly before commenting, ok for a start Green energy is sustainable (when did I say it wasn't?) but it is NOT reliable these are two totally different things and the difference is reliability, Green energy does produce cheap power after the initial investment has been satisfied but it is NOT reliable, if the wind don't blow or the sun don't shine these two methods are up the Irwell without a paddle. On your second point Norway are in fact one of the biggest oil producers in the continent of Europe and Scotland's independence movement are basing their oil revenue "windfall" on the figures of primarily this country, so you need to tell your eco socialist mate Mr Salmond that his vision is a pipe dream. Your third point "Danemark"! no such country exists neither in Europe or the world in fact, what you mean is Denmark who actually rank 32nd in the world among net exporters of crude oil. Denmark expects to be self-sufficient with oil until 2050 but they expect to be importing Gas by 2020. In Denmark a large proportion of their electricity is produced from coal nearly 70% in fact. So unless to you coal has become "renewable" then that's your "facts" blown clear out of the water isn't it. I could go on with what else you say but I really can not be bothered debating with someone as condescending or shall we just say plain old THICK as yourself. A simple search of the net shows proof of what I say, I suggest Wikipedia as your first stop to a fairly basic further education Ken, although it's fairly basic it does quote credible independent sources in order to educate your good self. I also suggest you look into the current power demands on the national grid and maybe you could explain to us all how at 5-8pm when the grid has it's peak demand could power generation be increased to the demanded level within the generation methods of your vision? Solar, wind, and wave are all well out of the question, geo-thermal and nuclear even cannot be brought online rapidly enough to meet demand only Oil, Gas, & Coal can be RELIED upon to provide a rapid reaction. End of debate now for me Ken I will not bother replying to you as your Modern eco approach will be fatally flawed but as you are blinded to the needs of your fellow people and think only of your own selfish needs your response will be equally meaningless and senseless.

Alan your tone is rather condescending but I will explain green energy in small amounts has been going since the wheel was invented. Water Wheel Wind mills etc have been with us since biblical timesYour trying to tell me that Green Energy is not reliable or sustainable. I am very sorry but you people who are Oil at any cost just do not get it Oil is not sustainable it is running out . The country's That are Not run by the Oil mad profiteers like Germany Norway Etc. Are spending the biggest part of their fuel budgets on Green Energy Danemark is now 100% renewable/ Germany 70% and increasing Scotland is now selling Green Energy to Electrical Suppliers in Northern England. You do not stem to grasp the reason why the profit at all cost Oil companys are dead against Green Energy once a country goes Green that is their cash cow dead.Green Energy once up and running is virtually free Wind and Waves don't charge they are free Boy is that little word so disturbing to the money mad oil producers. As for me being a born again green I am sorry I have never heard of a born again green. I do know if I read something or hear something that to me sound like common sense I will follow it I was taught as a child God gave you a brain in the hope that you would use it SO THAT IS WHAT I DO VAYA CON DIAS PS And with Green Energy you do not have to pollute the Oceans Wreck the Rain Forest.

Alan Jones wrote

Ken I take it you are one of the born again breeds of modern greens that thinks all this is new. Let me educate you a little with some history of renewable fuel sources. The first wind turbines for generating electrical energy were installed in the 1970's the first solar farms appeared in the early 80's. Bio-fuel has been used for thousands of years it's called wood and we get it from trees. So you are correct in a way it was not on the drawing board but was in fact already in use and was producing energy, but as all educated people know green technology cannot be relied upon alone and the countries that have the most reliable energy supplies use a large mix of different fuel sources.

Some of the Councils like Salford by staying quiet they are agreeing with this filth One law they have sneaked in / No investigating into any complaints about the damage these FRACKERS DO. @Kenneth, one minute your comments are shouting the evils of dirty fuels like coal and spouting the eco alternatives as being the best way forward, the next you say things like "the UK was self sufficient in Gas Oil And Coal a certain bag women sold or closed down the lot", so which do you want? Dirty coal with miners still in jobs or Lady Thatchers dream of a forward looking energy market using a combination of Nuclear, Gas, Oil, And renewables to provide not only cheap but also dependable energy. Make your mind up Ken you can't keep playing the pit strike card if you actually oppose coal power.

Can somebody explain to beibdnn. That the UK was self sufficient in Gas Oil And Coal a certain bag women sold or closed down the lot. As for bringing on the Frackers it is as if he/she thinks that is a good alternative / How come then the Russians and French will not touch Fracking with a barge pole As for it being cheap some people do not see the destruction and desolation of the UK as Cheap. Dont you remember when they gave us the same bullshit about North Sea Oil They said it would be that cheap youcould could leave it on all day Some people cannot afford to switch it on touch

Umm. He broke his bail conditions. But I will tell you what, you pay for heating my home when Russian gas and French electricity cost £1000.00 a month and I'll agree that he is just a pillock. As to the outraged of the rest of the world, especially from Oz, you try to keep warm in minus 10 without a secure, affordable supply of energy. I suppose your attitude to all those OAP's dying of cold because they can't afford to heat their homes because of the sort of puerile, selfish, ersatz attempts to save the planet and other bollocks policies you endorse is that you have more right to an opinion than they do to life.

I can't wait to vote this government out. I thought our prisons were overflowing with prisoners who have been found guilty of serious crimes. Keeping Kate in prison means one of the more serious offenders walks free to make room for Kate. The law really is an Ass isn't it. Kate is a lovely young man who cares for our environment. He should be honoured, not put in prison. Shame on all who are part of his arrest and imprisonment especially the Judge who sent him back to jail.

The freedom envisaged by the Magna Carta and the Common Law has sometimes been suspended as in wartime when foreign nationals (who had done no wrong )were put into concentration camps like those on the Isle of Man.Exceptional circumstances like those do not apply today nor in minor local offenses.Very rare for defendants to have to resort to Habeas Corpus which is a process to readdress the balance if the Executive arm of government has exceed its remit.

The Sentence on Kate is a scandal,It should be the laws job to judge and if found guilty to pass a sentence that is befitting the crime , Not to make an example of the person who is found guilty that is pure vindictiveness. Judges are there to pass sentence not to make examples of people. But with this Fracking this government has got so much to gain by their selfserving and crooked approach on how it is going to be handled it is frightening. They have put local councils under the cosh by way of no investigating into any seismic disturbences. The Police are under no holds barred in its handling of any type of protest peaceful or otherwise. So now the Courts are under the same cosh . The media are also under the cosh no reporting on anything that is disadvantageous to the Frackers and the company's they work for .With this filth of a government the people of the UK are sleep walking into a ultra Right Wing Police State. No Rights No Access to Law.This Fracking is Horrendous and the people should be made aware of the true horrors of it. If anyone is going to visit Kate give him my regards and if there is anything he needs to let me know vie Steve Salford Star

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
