GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE DENY SALFORD RESIDENTS THE RIGHT TO PROTEST

Star date: 3rd March 2014

GMP KETTLE RESIDENTS TRYING TO PROTEST ON PUBLIC FOOTPATH

"The police seem to have forgotten their remit, they've lost the plot" Colin

Greater Manchester Police inspectors this morning denied local residents and anti-fracking campaigners the right to protest on Barton Moss Road, the public footpath used by lorries delivering to the iGas exploratory drilling site.

After a two hour lock-on in the road by three protectors, residents were kettled at the side of the road by Tactical Aid Unit officers, allowing lorries to drive unimpeded up the lane for the first time in three months.

For three months, daily demonstrations have taken place on Barton Moss Road, with residents and anti-fracking campaigners slow walking lorries up the lane to the iGas exploratory drilling site. This morning inspectors from Greater Manchester Police would not allow the daily demonstration to happen, with officers from its Tactical Aid Unit kettling people at the side of the road while the lorries drove in unimpeded.

Furious local residents argued with police officers, saying that their right to protest on a public footpath had been denied. The police action followed a three man lock-on in the middle of Barton Moss Road which took the GMP Protester Removal Team two hours to clear.

According to the Protect Barton Moss twitter feed, police had said that two hours was `long enough'. But it left those who were not part of the three man lock-on angry that their personal human right to protest had been violated.

"It's yet another instance where, to me, the police seem to have forgotten their remit, they've lost the plot" said Colin, from the Barton Moss Community Protection Camp "They have now deemed themselves as fit to decide when we can protest and when we can't, and if we can protest how long we can protest for.

"A policeman actually said to me this morning `We've given you your right to protest' and for me that sets major alarm bells ringing because, excuse me, the right to protest is something that we inherently have, it's not something the police have any right to give or not to give us.

"There's the European Human Rights Articles 10 and 11, the United Nations version" he explained "Just like there is Article 9, the right to not be arbitrarily arrested - yet sixty per cent of all the arrests are totally arbitrary in as much as ten people are doing the same thing and only, say, two are made an example of, apparently chosen at random. It's more of the same. The police are making it up as they go along for all appearances, to suit the corporate agenda."

Last night and today, campaigners from Barton Moss occupied land outside the Greater Manchester Police headquarters in Newton Heath, Manchester in protest at `police brutality and violence' – now they are adding the denial of protest to their agenda.

The problems with the UK are all related to one simple fact in my opinion. Which is that no Government since the Second World War has ever delivered on the promises made to the UN of respecting, protecting and fulfilling "All Human Rights for All". The Courts don;t even acknowledge the existence of 'legally binding' International Law, unless it suits them or the State. Whereas The International Bill of Human Rights has been 'legally binding' on all of the UK since the 20th Aug 1976. For more details of what you can do about it follow this link http://you.38degrees.org.uk/p/bill-of-rights

Chris - the public were denied their right to protest. The protest is to walk in front of the lorries (down the public footpath) to delay the operations of igas. On Monday the public were kettled to one side, so were not only denied their right to peacefully express their protest, but also denied their right to lawfully use the public footpath, on which a pedestrian always has right of way over a vehicle. The police told the public 'you've had your protest today' but he was wrong because 3 individuals performed the lock-on, not the rest of the public. Might I add, the lock-on was done in such a way that the only igas would be disrupted, not the public.

A couple of points made on here about Tories. We live in a one party Police state. Do you not understand that yet? Banging on about left/right/left of centre, upside down, any which way but loose, it's all the same game. Played by bought and paid for liars, pirates and thieves. It astounds me that people still believe that if they vote they can somehow change things. There is one way; if you don't but it they won't make it. For those who weren't watching, a bill passed through both houses recently without as much as a squeak from our so called reps stopping just about all forms of protest that were left in this country. That is why you now have the arrogance of the police telling you who pay their wages(really?)that they've given you permission to protest.

Surely the police should be charged with obstruction as well as the numerous other charges false imprisonment, corruption in public office etc etc that could & should be bought against them.

All Police Forces are owned by large corporations. As are all other forms of government. Check it out on Dunn & Bradstreet. Here in Hampshire only 5% of people voted for a crime commissioner, not that there is any need for anything like that. I notice GMP PCC has set up an independent panel to examine to examine major protests and demonstrations. Well there is nothing to examine. The public are severely dissatisfied with the way the country is being run. What kind of water/food and air do these same Police think they are going to use once everything has been polluted and they/their children and extended families along with everyone who gives a... going to use. I don't regard them as boys in blue any more. Nationally we have a paramilitary private Army kitted out like Judge Dredd. Anyone old enough to remember the comic this character came from will know exactly the kind of law he dealt out. Sine they have already killed so many civilians, are we really so far away from that model? Read Agenda 21. Qui Bono

The police are supposed to be there to protect us, not violate our rights and impose their views onto us. They should care about the communities they are there to 'serve' not decide when they can protest and when they can't, when it's been long enough etc. What next, will they start going door to door to make sure everybody is in bed before 11pm. It's only going to get worse, the control collar is being tightened slowly but surely.

They were not being denied the right to protest, only the right to block the road to traffic. Protest at the side of the road. Ridiculous comments from the frustrated protesters - as usual.

This is actually the thinnest end of the corporate wedge! The police are bought and paid for by these fracking companies and are no no longer there to protect the public but only 'Public Interest'. And what is the @ Public interest'? It's whatever the corporations and the Police say it is. All these EU Human Rights laws you rely on to protest come from the same people who are responsible for not one police officer being prosecuted for over 1000 deaths in custody in the last decade or so. The public only pay for the Police for the benefit of tax dodging coporations!

More law breaking by our law enforcement agency, not as bad as the violence they have been using, lying and cheating is not a good look for the boys in blue, will the people not rise up until it becomes the norm I wonder?

A proper Salford lass, Margaret worked on Lancaster Bombers during the war and as a machinist in Strangeways, and, as the family partied with residents and staff, there were a zillion anecdotes that will echo with loads of local families.
