In the words of Tom Robinson, "If left is right, then right is wrong you better decide which side you're on…" And Tuesday night in Walkden gives you that opportunity to decide, as the Salford Scrap takes place at The Legion.
In the left corner is Salford City UNISON branch secretary, Steve North, who eats Mayors and ConDem Government lackeys for breakfast. And in the right corner is Walkden South Tory councillor, Iain Lindley, who probably has cream tea and scones for breakfast.
It's Tory versus Socialism. Left v Right. Red v Blue. And the topics up for debate are Fracking, Government Spending Priorities (Cuts), Benefits and Immigration. Four hot issues. Four sweaty rounds of political slugging, gouging and grappling, happening in the face of a live Salford audience - with a chance to have a verbal swing at the combatants later. It's going to be real.
"It will be a great opportunity for people to come along who may want to ask questions concerning local issues in a public debate format, without it relating to an election campaign" says Janet O'Shaughnessy of Walkden Community, which is hosting the bout "The panel members will be speaking as well as answering questions, so even if you have no specific questions as such, it will be an entertaining evening all round."
Walkden Community, a local community group, was set up three years ago to build community spirit in the area.
"We encourage people of Walkden to try and shop locally and take pride in the area we live" Janet explains "We have a number of events planned at the moment. We have organised a mass poppy seed scatter for next month so that Walkden will be covered in poppies at the time of the WW1 centenary in July, and have involved all the local schools, churches and youth groups including the scouts and guides. Another event we have planned is Poppies in the Park which is to take place in July 2014 to commemorate the actual centenary at Parr Fold Park in Walkden. This will be a fun filled family day, hopefully in the sunshine."
Meanwhile, in mid-winter, the gloves are off and let the Tory v Socialism scrap begin!
