PEGGY SEEGER JOINS ANTI-CAPITALIST ROADSHOW

Singer Peggy Seeger, wife of Salford legend Ewan MacColl, plays a rare local gig when she joins the Anti-Capitalist Roadshow for their concert on 29th September to coincide with the huge TUC demonstration outside the Tory Party conference. Peggy is joined by political folk legends Roy Bailey, Sandra Kerr, Leon Rosselson and Jim Woodland.

Peggy Seeger is never one to shy away from slagging off big business and its political allies. In an interview with Salford Star in 2007 (printed issue 4) she talked about Ewan MacColl's Salford and how the developers, with eyes only for profits, are taking away our history and identity.

Peggy added that she doesn't sing MacColl's Salford anthem Dirty Old Town as part of her set… "I'm not sure if I could do justice to it" she said "It needs more emotional identification than I've got. But if I ever come to Salford again I will have a try…if everyone sings along with me…"

Peggy's not quite coming to Salford, but she is appearing in Manchester at the Anti-Capitalist Roadshow, brought to the city to coincide with the huge TUC demo that will be snaking its way past the Tory Party conference earlier in the day.

On stage alongside Peggy, celebrating `subversion and resistance', will be political folk legends Roy Bailey, Sandra Kerr, Leon Rosselson and Jim Woodland, plus socialist magician Ian Saville.

"The Anti-Capitalist Roadshow is a collective of singers and songwriters, plus one socialist magician, opposed to the ideologically driven austerity programme imposed by this millionaire government on all but the elite and in particular on the poor, vulnerable and disabled" says Leon Rosselson

"We are part of the resistance to a capitalism that works only on behalf of the wealthy, that aims to shrink the public sphere and privatise public services, including the NHS, and is destructive to the planet" he adds "We are part of another way of looking at the world."

Sounds like a great way to wind down after a day winding up the Tories. And, if enough people plead, maybe Peggy Seeger will sing Dirty Old Town…
