SALFORD AIDS ROMANIAN KIDS

Star date: 9th October 2011

13 TONS OF AID NEEDED FROM ECCLES TO ROMANIA

In just over a week's time, a 20ft container will leave Eccles to help disadvantaged children in Romania. It's going to orphanages, care homes and camp sites.

LIM, a registered charity based in Eccles, is looking for help from Salford people to fill the container – everything from food, to clothes, to fridges.

Lighthouse International Ministries, or LIM, is a registered charity based in Eccles which has been helping out Romanian children who live in some of the worst poverty in Europe. Some of the stories are quite harrowing and hopeful…

Stefan was six months old when one of LIM's workers found him in an orphanage, tied to a cot and bandaged from the neck down. When the bandages were removed it was found that he had only stumps of arms and legs. Nearly twelve years later, Stefan has been fitted with prosthetic limbs and has been happily reunited with his family.

Radu was brought to a camp from a gypsy village in a wheelbarrow because he couldn't walk. He was 14 but didn't speak and was severely underweight. Two years on, Radu ran out to greet the team arriving from England. He had put weight on, and was walking, talking and eating like a 'normal' 16-year-old.

These are some of the LIMA successes but the works continues and the charity is asking Salford people to help out by filling a 20ft container with 13tons of humanitarian aid. And they've got just over a week to do it. They are asking for donations of…

• Clothes / shoes – in good condition
• Furniture
• White goods (Fridges, freezers, washing machines, cookers)
• Educational materials
• Hygiene products (toothpaste, soap, shampoo)
• Decent computers in working order
• Foodstuffs – in date, non-perishable

LIM can collect donations or arrange for you to drop them off. Just call Jeff Stoker on 07967 751494 or e-mail jeff@stoker67.freeserve.co.uk

Everything must be received by Tuesday October 18th at the latest.

Nothing to do with xenophobia . Just elementary economics . Why fill the world's begging bowl , when we have so many needy here ? Especially the aged , many of whom fought for this dreadful hellhole britain , and are condemned to freeze to death this winter , as thousands have before ? The truth is they are seen as a burden in this hellish , greedy , self-serving society , a lesson from the evil thatcherites. This rotton society should help it's own citizens first , second and last . If you want to donate , donate to AGE CONCERN .

Does anybody really think that giving our cast offs to pensioners will save anybody in this country from freezing to death this winter. Yeah right! The only way to prevent any deaths is to stop the utility companies from squeezing us dry while they amass huge profits. But then the usual xenophonbic claptrap is bound to emerge when anybody tries to do the humanitarian thing abroad. It makes me feel truly nauseous.

I agree with your sentiments , Caroline . But how much of this Aid will end up being sold in Romanian shops , or stolen by the corrupt authorities ? One thing is certain , the corrupt Romanian authorities will be there to leech whatever they can . The Romanian peoples should rise up and smash their corrupt rulers .

SALFORD STAR – 15 YEARS OF ATTITUDE AND LOVE XXX

The Salford Star closes tonight after 15 years of giving the community a voice, holding power to account and bigging up all the great things that have happened in the city.

Thousands of people in Salford have been involved in one way or another with the Star and we'd like to thank them all. Salford is a very special city and, hopefully, we've given it a very special community publication.

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE: HOW SALFORD COUNCIL TRIED TO BLOCK AND DISCREDIT THE STAR

Star date: 17th May 2021

THREATS, LIES, FEAR AND LOATHING IN SALFORD...

Today, the Salford Star shuts down but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. Here the Salford Star editor, Stephen Kingston, looks at how democracy perished badly under the Salford mayoral system.

A WHIFF OF FREEDOM AS RESTRICTIONS ARE EASED

Salford has 7 new coronavirus cases, down from the previous day's 14, while the seven day rate per 100,000 population now stands at 30.1, down from 30.9. There have been no new virus-related deaths announced by Salford Royal Hospital.

Today sees restrictions eased and the first whiff of freedom in over a year. It's also the final coronavirus bulletin from the Salford Star which is closing. Here we look back over 14 months of the pandemic and the absolute communication failings of Salford City Council and its City Mayor.

THEY WILL TRY TO DISCREDIT YOU...TO BLOCK YOU, TO SHUT YOU DOWN

We are almost at the final closure of the Salford Star but we write this article as a warning to others who may follow on the pitfalls of founding a genuine publication that aims to give the community a voice and hold public bodies up to account.

They will try to discredit you, block information and shut you down. In South America they just blow up the offices of journalists that don't play the game. Here they just financially assassinate you...

SALFORD STAR CLOSURE – GUY GRIFFITHS ON THE HUMAN COST OF PATHFINDER DEMOLITIONS

Star date: 16th May 2021

THE HUMAN COST OF REGENERATION

The Griffiths brothers of Higher Broughton are kind of infamous as the only people to be forcefully evicted from their house as part of the Pathfinder 'housing market renewal' project during the first decade of the 21st Century.

Here, Guy Griffiths, now living in 'sunny' north Wales and one of the main inspirations for the Salford Star's creation, writes the second part his own personal view of the Government project that devastated communities throughout Central Salford.
