The 25th anniversary Kinofilm Festival is finally able to be launched, after three postponements during the pandemic. Between 10th and 16th May, around two hundred local, national and international short films will be shown online, via 28 different programmes, while later in the year, 19th to 24th October, there will be physical in-person screenings.
This year's online edition kicks off with Stars in Shorts on 10th May, a taster featuring short movies with some famous faces, including Jack Whitehall, Timothy Spall and Juliet Stevenson amongst others. There's seven short films in this section, with comedy, romance, science fiction and adventure themes.
Also showing on 10th May are newcomers films from Africa and America, international student short films and a series of films under the title of Micro Wonders, with 'animation and experimentation, music videos and mobile phone movies, documentary portraits and meditative memoirs, snappy sketches and satiric stingers, surrealism, silliness, and short sharp shocks'...
On 11th May there are Spanish Shorts, French Shorts, Italian Shorts plus a Eurocine Programme of short films from around Europe. On 12th May there's Polish Shorts, East European and Russian short movies and LGBTQ Shorts...er, in short, something for everyone.
Throughout Kino Fest there's animation, movies for kids, plus every single genre you can think of, including Horror and Weird Shorts, all compiled by the ace film guru Steve Balshaw who has also curated GrimmFest and the much missed Salford Film Festival.
"The festival couldn't go ahead as planned in 2020 for our 16th edition due to the COVID lockdowns, however, we now can't wait for everyone to see the amazing
films we have lined up" says Festival Director John Wojowski "With the first part of the festival being online this year, it's a chance for everyone to experience the festival, no matter where they're from.
"It offers the chance for filmmakers to have their short film seen by people across the globe" he adds "Although we would like to be together in a live festival, it's a fantastic opportunity to create a global community from this shared audience and online experience..."
