The Labour Party's Andy Burnham is to face eight other candidates for Greater Manchester Mayor in the 6th May election.
The four main parties have all put up candidates...Laura Evans for the Conservative Party, Melanie Horrocks for the Green Party and Simon Lepori for the Liberal Democrats. There are also three Independents standing - Marcus Farmer, Alec Marvel and David Sutcliffe, while Stephen Morris is standing for the English Democrats and Nick Buckley is standing for the Reform Party.
Nick Buckley, the Reform UK candidate, states that he is "creating ideas to save the UK... I now have a duty to contribute to fight against this far left, 'woke', Marxist intolerance that aims to tear down and destroy everything our forefathers built. Independent candidate Marcus Farmer promises a 'new way' and proposes a 'new dawn' with 'dialectic environmentalism'... "My idea is that the thesis (capitalism) and the antithesis (Marxism), which have literally been at each other's throats for the last 100 years or so, now need to give way to a new synthesis, which I put forward as 'dialectic environmentalism'. I believe that one's mental and physical environment is now deemed more important than material possessions. I'm therefore simply proposing a movement from materialism (capitalism versus Marxism) towards environmentalism." For more details click here
Independent candidate Alec Marvel seems only to have a Twitter account (@marvel_alec) which skims his proposals...no yearly charge for pensioners for their free travel passes, putting resources into homeless communities and he wants child abusers and murderers to be used as guinea pigs for vaccine testing.
Another Independent candidate is David Sutcliffe, a retired Greater Manchester Police Inspector who states that he is an 'anti-corruption candidate'... "I would be lying if I said I could deliver anything at this stage" he writes "I am aware of corruption on an 'industrial scale' that is occurring at the upper echelons of GMP and at the Mayor's office and would expect to find the same profligate waste of public money, poor decision making and incompetence throughout the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. I would have to investigate how bad the situation is before making any spending pledges. Staff reporting of wrongdoing and their protection would be of upmost importance." Stephen Morris is standing for the English Democrats and states that he would have a "Zero tolerance policy towards political correctness in policing" and that "Family-friendly policies will be a requirement for businesses tendering for local Government contracts", while "Care units will be set up to take all the homeless off the streets of Greater Manchester" – click here for more details
Laura Evans is the Conservative Party candidate and claims to have a 'better plan' that will "Crack down on crime by putting more police on the beat with the powers and extra resources they need...Improve public transport with better buses on more routes and extending the tram network...Build homes people can afford and make sure they're in places with schools, roads and health care facilities".

Melanie Horrock is the Green Party candidate and states that "One of the first targets I will set as Mayor is to reduce all road deaths to zero" while challenging "all 10 councils to put the climate crisis as a priority. Currently, we have councils that have made the pledge for net zero, but continue the hypocrisy of pumping money into large polluter Manchester Airport, whilst also investing teachers' pensions in oil and gas. Simon Lepori is the Liberal Democrat candidate and he lists his priorities as "building a healthcare system fit for the 21st century in Greater Manchester; refocusing policing back into communities, with well funded youth services from local councils to help stem the tide and cycle of crime and disorder, a transport system that works for Greater Manchester not against it" and "a housing plan that puts people first, not developers". And finally, Andy Burnham is the Labour Party candidate, who said at his press briefing on Wednesday that he will enshrine a good employment charter in the procurement process for Greater Manchester contracts, drive improvement across the transport system and will put disability rights at the forefront of his campaign, particularly in relation to train station access.
